Cheap screens, good for modding.

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Cheap screens, good for modding.

Post by Goodwin »

Ive had a look around this site and have not seen anyone mention the two sellers that I have seen with the best offers.

The first is www.mp3playerstore.com I bought an in-car DVD and a 7" TFT from them last year, arrived pretty quick and both good quality, probably not the cheapest around but cheaper than I can get hold of in the UK for that type of kit.

The second is an ebay seller chinaezone, they sell a 2.5" for £4.99 and a 4" for £9.99, the postage costs are high but that is obviously why they have the cheap screens, their feedback mentions slow postage in a number of places but as long as it turns up I would be happy for thoose prices.

Here's a pic of the 2.5" they sell.

and a link to their UK Ebay site, probably got a US one too:-

If this post breaks any rules then can a mod remove it please, some sites dont like links to external sales. I am in no way linked to either of these companies.

Any idea if they have 6" screens or bigger for around $20? 6" LCD would be sweet... :D

The prices at the site are pretty good considering the sizes.

Is 112,320 pixels high resolution for a 2.5 LCD, or is that bad? If it actually is high resolution, i might consider buying...

My friend has just kindly purchased two of the 2.5" screens as in the picture above from the ebay seller I mentioned, one for his xbox the other is for mine :D

I will be installing both, will the following pinout work from the Hip Gear install?

Image
So all I would need to do is wire in the video and video ground and jump the two connectors (closest to the video cables) if I wanted to use the screen without the video cable connected.

The screen is 12v so can I just run this from the molex as I did with the Hip screen?

Will the video cables be easy to locate, ie. easy to trace from existing connectors or just base it on the board layout?

Thanks

Just hack the wires running to the back of the BOX, and tie in there. The screen will work on any 12V line (if it has enough current).

Im going to be building the screen into the case of the xbox, I dont want to just hack into the cables going into the box as that will give me more external wires.

If you mean the wires going into the back of the screen 'BOX' then that would work, but I will be re-housing it anyway.

If I use the video in and video ground from the diagram above I assume I will just have to find out which cable is which on the screen side.

I ment hack the wires from the inside of the XBOX, not the outside.

You do the exact same thing as any other system, just tie the wires to the inside of the multi-plug.

Im not that brave, I have installed a Hip Gear screen before in one but that board blew due to silly mistake in leaving something resting on the board when I switched it on!

The plan with these screens is to leave the xbox as a standard box but install the screen where ports 3-4 are on a standard, just giving a little screen for looks more than anything.
