BIG DIFFERENCE!

Post by nerd of nerds »

there is a BIG friggen difference between BASIC and ASSEMBLY!!!!!!!

assembly is NOT easy to master, it is actually very complicated to get it to do very much!

i've messed around with arm assembly and that was pretty hard...

just do yourself a favor and start out on the pc first...

don't make anything for consoles until you are very confident with your pc coding skills...

and making weapons for games and making games is so incredibly different i can't even beging to explain it!

and games made with that program you mentioned aren't hard to make becuase a great majority of the work has already been done for you.

if you intend to be stubborn and not take my advice then at LEAST start out on the GP32 or gameboy advance.

that brings us to a completely different matter as well....

how do you intend to run the programs on real hardware?

just get a flash cartridge for gameboy advance or get a gp32....

that will make your life much easier...

take my advice, i was 13 once

I agree, I just started some 6502 assembly a few weeks ago and it's much harder than any other language.

Me!

Plus I didn't say I was creating my game in Assembly, and I have a GBA demo done, and since the Megadrive is my favourite console (I like SNES too) I want to program a game for that, it seems easy enough in BASIC, I made a few PC games using that as well.

i don't think there is a basic compiler for the sega genesis...if there is then by all means prove me wrong, but even then....

you've probobly been using dragonbasic or whatever its called for the gba...even then a ton of work has already been done for you and you won't be treated the same way with the genesis.

you need to learn C or C++, this is the most useful skill to have when programming. read some books about it then see if you think you can write programs for the genesis.

I think I've seen a C compiler for Genesis somewhere on the net.

I've been programming professionally for over 4 years now and doing homebrew stuff on the Dreamcast for about a year now. I'd really like to learn some SH4 assembler for Dreamcast but I just can't bring myself to do it. You know why? Too much effort with no gain in my professional life. Assembler is always specific to the system for which you are developing. I don't think I'll ever have a chance to use SH4 programming skills in the real world. Yes, there are some PocketPCs that run SH4, but most of them are now leaning towards ARM chips, which is what the GBA and DS use.

I suggest learning C/C++ and using it to make simple PC programs first before diving into console programming.
