LED mods are terrible. We must fix this!

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

I looked in to the transreflective polarizers some more. 3M only sells ones for monochrome LCDs.

Still looking though...

... Upon further reserach, making a normal transreflective LCD is impossible. Here's a nice pictorial explanation:
http://t17.net/transflectiveTFT/

As you can see, a transreflective LCD has essentially twice the resolution of a normal LCD, with half of the pixels reflecting light and half of the pixels letting light through from behind. I still want to try a one-way mirror (or just a plain old mirror) behind the lcd and see if that does anything, though.

I'm not sure that a mirror behind the screen would be effective.

A white surface should be better for a diffuse reflection of the light back out the screen through all angles, the mirrored surface would reflect the light from the backlight at an angle equal to the angle of incidence where it hits the mirror, good for sunlight, bad for a regular backlight.

But having said that, it couldn't hurt to try.

In a REALLY old thread around here, someone replaced the backing with metalized mylar (Bright silver) and it was said to work well.

i'm still sceptical, in all the lcd's i have seen the backing was white, if mylar was really any better then it would be in screens all over the place.
although again, it couldn't hurt to try, would mylar from a balloon be suitable?

Yes it would. And actually, try taking a DS Lite screen. They have silver mylar backing. :D Perhaps this is what makes the colors all off balance and bright? No problem for N64, though. :D

@nevermind: That is not applicable.

I say it would reflect at least a little better.

word, the parts make the difference. end of it. The LED strip though looks tight, and defiantly a part that will make an effect.

First off, in a PM from Daftmike (I'll post the whole thing if you care about LED talk)
the leds i used in my psone screen, were very ordinary plcc-2 leds, 600mcd and a beam angle of 120°, and are about 1.8 lumens each at 20mA.
For future reference, I thought that should be there. I hate going through old thread like this is destined to be one day, and not know what they used and how what I buy will compare.

---------

So, as per the emails, you can see I ordered no more than 8" long of this stuff. Get this.

First of all, I got the stuff today. There must be a factory nearby. Second of all (Pictures to come), I got 11" x 11" of two different types of BEF-III x (Not sure of the letter), an 11" x 11" sheet of the TRAF (the godsend for LED mods), and... get this... Like two feet squared of the DBEF-II. It's sad I can't use it all in my laptop, but I will be putting the DBEF-II in there, if it doesn't already have it. I don't have a screen to do this on at the moment, so you'll have to wait until someone else gets stuff. Try ordering 12" of it, see if you get four 24" sheets :P

Were you referring to this thread?

I remembered that one because it was one of the first threads I ever posted in.

I thought this is the whole reason OLED screens were made. They're pretty awesome and are power efficient. (sorry, not helping, i realize you are doing this mod for LCDs)
Making stuff with my new beautiful CNC machine!

Yes, but OLED screens are REALLY REALLY EXPENSIVE.
