BJWanlund wrote:THAT is one female of the dog species' Portable! I have several questions (i have a GB at home and I plan on modding that puppy to make a portable NES):

First, I gotta fix the damn battery cover and battery compartment. I used Velcro (not a good idea, don't try this at home) to affix the damned thing into place. The battery compartment, on the other hand, got a taste of battery powder (don't ask me why). Is it possible to restore the damn thing to its former glory before I dick with the guts?

Second, NOACs. I know these are illegal to a point (ie with romz0rs on them), but are there legal ways to get a NOAC? I wanted to make one myself, while hacking open my NES to figure out what all the other NOACs lack in compatibility with games such as Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Is this possible, or have I been smoking the reefer again?

Third, the cartridges. It's a direct connection, I can see that. However, is the connector permanently soldered into the Gameboy?

Fourth, the screen. Did you have to do heavy modification to have the screen be colorized, or did you hack a pocket television to fit the screen res, and just replaced the green screen cover?

Fifth, the cool Yoshi green color mod. What colors did you mix to make that beautiful Yoshi green? (sorry, got color mixing on the mind, art class is a Finster)

Sixth, the mod where you put something in there to mask the GAME BOY logo. What the hell is that?

Seems like I just ran out of questions. I'll let you answer those 6, G-force, and I can come up with more q's.

1) My first NESp had the same problem (broken latch). I superglued a piece of aluminum over the place it broke, then glued a magnet from radioshack to the case and to the end of the aluminum. Worked great!
Battery acid is no problem, it just washes off. Unless your battery contacts are corroded, in which case you'll have a heck of a time getting them clean.

2) I haven't tryed Castlevania 3, but I think it should work. Every game I've put in this thing thus far has worked perfectly.
The only thing that makes NOAC's illegal is the pirated games. I bought a red version of the super joy 3 that had all the games on a famicom cartridge, so as long as I remove that it's perfectly legal to own/sell. I bought this from gannon btw. I would reccomend buying from him any day.

3) The cart connector isn't soldered onto the gameboy silly, you can't solder plastic :P It's superglued and hot glued very firmly in place. what I did was line the edges of the case with superglue, then drop a bunch of hot glue in the case where the connector would be, then quickly stick the connector (already wired of course) into the case. It'll never come loose.

4) The screen is from a hip gear screen controller. It's 2.3" color LCD, and is quite high in quality. I got mine from jeff, thaks jeff! (don't ask him for them though, he only had one)

5) It's just some green Krylon spray paint. I thoght it looked great with the purple buttons and silver back. If you use spray paint, don't forget to spray a couple coats of clear polyurethane on it for protection (the green really didn't need it, but the silver does. It wears real easy)

6) You mean around the screen protector? I was wondering if anyone would ask about it. It's some stairway grip tape I got at menards on sale. Made by 3M. You just cut it and stick it on. It's very similar to the grip tape used on skate boards.

Ha ha, bring on the questions! I like answering them.

Nice!

Anywho, more questions...

1) What are the games you have tried so far, and were there any problems with the light gun games (Hogan's Alley, Duck Hunt, etc.)? I want to use my Zapper in my NESp, but I'll take the NESp from Ben Heck's book.

2) How much time did you devote to the project?

3) How would the ROB work, if at all?

4) What are the problems in the games so far (ie a graphical glitch, etc.)?

1) Lessee here..
Super Mario Bros., 1942, Ninja Gaiden, COntra, Rad Racer, Teenage Mutatn Ninja Turtles, Metal Gear, Galaga, Double Dragon, 3-D World Runner, RC Pro-Am, Batman, Top Gun, Ice Hockey, Smash TV, Punch Out, etc.

Lots of others, but I either forgot them or played them at a friends house. Not one game has had any problems.

I did have the player 2/lightgun port on my first NESp, and every game I treid worked perfectly using AV out (Duck hunt, Operation Wolf, etc). But you can't play light gun games on this one because I left out the player 2 port in order to make it more comfortable to hold and look better. And also because I never used it on my old one. I have 2 NES's, I just use them when I get an itch for Duck hunt.

2) Lost track. It was on and off for a couple weeks.

3) Never owned a ROB. Looks like a waste of space to me...

4) Sometimes if the batterys starts to get low sometimes part of Mario will disapear for a half second while you're moving. Oh yeah, you have to have the brightness and contrast set right or you can see a weird line going up and back down. But with it set right you can't see it at all.
I wouldn't call those glitches, but it's worth mentioning.

I frikkin love this thing :D

I got my NOAC from www.powerplayerusa.com , and it came fairly quickly. Despite the fakey looking website, they are quite reliable and even gave me a tracking number through USPS, so they aren't fake. Also, Gannon's website says he's out, but he never updates the store page. Drop him a PM to ask for one, because he probably does, just it's not on his site.
