It kinda does depend on the situation, but for general languages to learn just because, like others have said, C is great, then C++. BASIC was my first language, it's pretty fun to code with and is easy to learn. (Plus, the Tandy 102 has BASIC on it.

This reminds me of the AVR vs. PIC wars.

I prefer C to C++ for no reason at all almost.

To put this to rest when I was at my interview with Intel they wanted to make sure I knew C. Understanding ASM was after that then Perl Scripting.
