bridge rectifier/AC adapter

It's a good idea. It doesn't shut off the batteries when you connect the AC adapter, but you can install a switch to do that, and when you want to switch back, just flip the switch and pull the plug. You can connect and disconnect the AC adapter while the system is on and not have it reset. It truly is a good idea because of this.

actually, if your battery voltage is only 8.4v, and the AC adapter voltage is 9Vrms, then the AC adapter will automatically reverse-bias the diode coming from the battery. So when you plug in the AC adapter, it will prevent any current from flowing from the battery, essentially turning it off. You dont need an extra switch that way.
