Got it, this is the digikey part number for the 3.3v DC-DC convertor we've all been waiting for: 454-1042-ND

Think of all the money you'll save on rechargable paks because you don't use the charge cycles as fast. I like it, especially since I wasn't thrilled about putting 2 huge battery packs into my N64p.

does this thing save battery life or does it just heat up and waste the juice?

i think those are the ones that waste battery life and lower wattage.

Well, if you're going from 7.2v, you don't get much battery life with a 3.3v regulator, just the same as if you were running a 7.2v device. With a DC-DC convertor, you double the battery life because the extra voltage means extra amperage and the 1.5A device now only takes about 750mA @ 7.2v instead of 1.5A @ 7.2v.

Regulator: Without the backlight mod, about 48 minutes, with, about an hour.

DC-DC convertor: Without the backlight mod, about 1 hour, 8 minutes, with the backlight mod, about 1 hour, 36 minutes

I would go for the 3 Ah 7.2v battery pack from RadioShack and the last option, that would give you over 2 hours of playtime.
