If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.
It's important to point out that while you can cut off the top, I don't think Gamelver successfully chopped off the bottom. Pretty sure he messed up the screen.

If you are planning on LED modding the screen, then yes you can just chop off the top pretty close to the LCD. Do you currently have a screen in hand that you can look at or are you just asking for when you get one? If you have one on hand, you can see you won't need anything from the top if you're taking out the original light.
Edit: I made a fabulous picture just so everyone's clear exactly where the easiest place is to trim down the board

what i may do with my psone screen is just relocate the transformer, it will save me a bit of height and i dont have to do the led mod (i dont have money for leds and i would probably kill something lol)
I currently have a sony psone screen. Thanks for the nice pic. Of course I am going to attempt an led mod once my leds come in. Also I was looking at your pic and was wondering if I needed to could the sides be trimmed/shaved down?
Not a whole lot. I managed to cut 1/2 cm off of one side (the right, I think.) where there are no components. It works nicely for me, but unless you need that space I'd just leave it.
