As for your problem, as will any custom PC, a person would prolly have to actually see it and try it out in order to give you a meaningful solution.

its not bad but its no gamer by any standard

oh. i borrowed hl2 from a friend and after about 20 min of steam loading updates i got tired of waiting and decided to cancel and uninstall it.

As for HL2, I got it up and running. There are a lot of updates it has to do, but once done, you can just play offline. Just wait it out, let it finish updating, and once complete, make sure your ethernet cable isn't plugged in when you turn on your PC. Simple! =) I didn't read all of the posts, so I'm not sure what's happening really...
