Can I splice my Snes Controller for a shorter cord?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

I don't know how short you want, but super-famicom controllers have about half the wire length of the US system. (designed for smaller Japanese homes maybe)
