New and (kind of) improved LED mod!!!!

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

New and (kind of) improved LED mod!!!!

Post by Gamelver »

Well, I've finally finished my new and, er, kind of improved LED mod :P...anyway, I'm pretty sure that the things I added made a pretty nice difference :)...hell, it wasn't looking too bad without the brightness mod, so it must be at least kind of improved ;)...

anyway, here's how do the NEW LED mod :):
1. get some aluminum foil...yes, aluminum foil!!! :P...you see, it helps spread the light around so that it doesn't go where it's not needed (like NOT on the screen :P)

2. take apart the lcd backlight module. there should be two main parts (three, kind of). there are 2 sheets of plastic and one big plastic light diffuser...thing :P

3. take the aluminum foil and cut it into the shape of the "light diffuser" part of the LCD backlight module. the light diffuser (that's what I call it :P) is that main piece of plastic with little dimples in it, remember ;)?

4. place the aluminum foil under the light diffuser.

5. wire up the LEDs like you would normally (I usually wire 4, so the light is even :))

6. once that's done, put hot glue over the leads of the LEDs so that when you put aluminum foil on top of them they don't short.

7. get small strips of aluminum foil and put them around the LEDs so that the excess light is directed back into the screen.

8. once that's done for all 4 (or however many LEDs you used), put the LCD backlight module back together and you're all done :)!!!!

later, when I can find an ac adapter that outputs 5V (or an extra battery) I'll take some pics :)
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

good work.

ive had an idea of connnectiong it from where the tube connected. maybe that would make it turn on when the screen does...

Cool idea! Did you know they make aluminum tape? They sell it at Menards and Lowes, it's for duct work. That might work a bit better than just aluminum foil.

Got any comparison pics?

you could probably spray silver spray paint on the white plastic thing on the back of the lcd to keep the light in it instead of foil. just an idea, never tested it though

i think using different leds may be the answer. I have a theory its the colour spectrum on the leds that makes it looks dim!

If you connected the LEDs where the tube connected, you'd have a good chance of blowing them up. The CCFL tubes need a fairly high voltage to run, and the initial voltage (to turn it on) would definetly be too high (that warning about high voltage is there for a reason).

And the approach using aluminum foil sounds good, I'd like to see how it turned out :).

If you setup the LEDs correctly, they sould go on and off with the screen anyways. I don't think silver paint would work as well as tin foil, because most silver paint isn't very reflective(it looks like it is, but it isn't).
