Power cicruits, screens, questions, Oy!

Post by Motoman »

I'm in the market of trying to make an N64p and have muchos preguntas (lots of questions):

1: Wiring diagrams? Why so complicated? What regulator can i use? How can i make it? Where can i get such a regulator?
2: What battery would be the best to use?
3: Which screen is better? Some say PSone others Gamecube....
4:Does the d-pad get used in all n64 games?
5: What to look out for to not fry it. (iv heard many people have)
6: Should I use a third or first party controller?

contestan mis preguntas, por favor! ( No i'm not spanish, Polish baby!)

1. Depends on the screen and batteries you use.
2. Your descision. Try finding something high capacity. It also depends on your screen. Go with something rechargeable, either Ni-MH or Li-Ion.
3. For 5", go with PS1. If you want 2.5", either HipGear or Intec works.
4. Not all, infact a lot don't. That is why many people don't put the D-Pad on their portables. I personally like the D-Pad, so I would keep it.
5. The whole thing. LOL. The N64 is very sensitive to static, so tie yourself to ground. You may also want turn on the power for a few minutes without any power source connected.
6. Doesn't really matter. Some third party controllers use joysticks with pots, and some have better sticks. If they use pots, they are easy to replace with GC joysticks.

Both can run at 7.2V, and the N64 also needs about 3.3V.

It is 2 seperate lines. You need a 7.2 line, and you also need a regulator to drop it to 3.3V for the 3.3V line.

If you can get something to regulate 7.2V to ~3V, then you can use a 7.2V power source. Just forget about the screen in that picture.

where could i get such a regulator? wait, would this work?:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1

so i need a seperate power sourec for the screen and a seperate one for the mobo? (i think i'm going to use a gamecube screen, same plugs no hassle, which one would be the best? Intec, interact, or the verge gamecube screen?)

You only need one power source. 7.2V will work fine with most screens, including the PS1 screen. I doubt that regulator will work with a 7.2V battery though. Most car adaptors won't work at less than 10.2V.

you've heard right. Gforce got an intec screen to run off something around 6 volts (check his post) so intec would probably be better than interact, which takes 18v

the easiset solution for me was making a main 12V power supply, and then riggin up a bunch of DC-DC car adapters to get all the differnt voltages i needed. screen is 7.2, n64 is 12 and 3.3... i needed 2 on the 3 volt line, tied the 12 v directly in, and the screen got its juice from a single adapter. i can find an adjustable adapter at wal-mart for under 12 bux.

its a bit complictaed, but once yu look at it, its like that where waldo thingy... once yu find him, yu wonder how yu dint find him earlier.

perfect, that's the way I'm going to do it (if i ever get another N64), but my dc-dc regulator will push out 3.3V rather than 3v. Make sure the regulator can handle at least 1000mA though (1A), preferably more. Mine will handle up to 2100mA. RPGTNick (if i got that right used a 1000mA on his, but a graphically intense game (perfect dark, or DK64 may need more, although i could be worng).

Also, put your SPDT switch on the - line rather than the +, apprently it reduces the risk of frying components, as the power goes from - to +. I'm sure nos_slived told me that so he could confirm that for you.
