It's pretty easy to copy the xbox's hard drive. Just hook up the flash drive and the xbox drive to your computers ide and use a copying program. You just need to make sure that the xbox's drive is unlocked. You'll boot up your xbox and after it boots up you need to disconect its ide cable but leave the molex connected so it gets power. Then connect the box's hard drive it to your computer while it is on.
I really want an xbox version 1 so I can mod it using its own bios chip.

You can replace the hdd two was, 1) is if you have a mod chip just yank out the old hard drive and plug in a new one, or 2) Follow the tourtorial that has you use DOS to bless the new hdd with the lock that the old one has.
As for the card reader, if the basic system data doesnt excced 1GB then your fine to try. But then again you'll most likely to need a MU for your game saves as some games (halo) eat up memory like no tomarrow.
Personally I'd see about doing that when an Xbox is under $100, as the Xbox I have is going to get a mod chip and possibly run linux. So who know maybe in 6-12 months.

This is what I want to do if I can get a version 1 box. http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/multibios-tsop.php
I'm not sure if what I said is right about replacing the HD but it is kinda like that. A really good place for tutorials is http://www.xbox-scene.com/tutorials.php

Hm my Xbox has a similar setup to that described on the link you gave. ON the back there are 3 switches one for switching between the Evox Bios and the Original. One for switching the modchip on/off, and one for switching the bios to flashable and non-flashable. I may be wrong, as I didn't install the switches, my dad did, but thats what he said the switches do so i'm going on that.
First MR. MOD why do you want a version 1 Xbox? There is really no difference between the versions save for the following; Time of release, hard drive and DVD-roms used and the first two versions have the points where the mod chip goes are filled in.
Now for the switch yes there are three switched; One for turing the mod chip on/off, Two for flashing the bios (or protecting it from over write), Three for which bios you want as the typical mod chip carrys two bios the linux and the .... one of your choice.
I'm guess thats all of it for now, for anyone else that has questions about moding the Xbox seriously look at xbox-scene I personally spend like half a month just reading up on mods and how to do them.

Hi, I'm the person who posted the topic in the Xbox-Scene forums, I didn't realise that my topic had spread this far!
Anyway, if you absolutely have your heart set on portablising the entrie Xbox, you would probably want to take the DVD drive out and just leave in a flash HDD loaded with some games. If you can't get a flash HDD big enough, you could get a WiFi adapter and stream the games from your PC.

Im sure that the xbox mobo will fit in a laptop case, assuming that the xbox is modded, you wont need a dvd-rom drive, just use the games copied to the hdd, and from what ive heard, laptop hdds can be used in the xbox. Now, assuming I am correct in what I said, we need to figure out how to possibly use a laptop battery and the built in lcd screen.
