Jae64 work log

Post by Jae » Fri Aug 12, 2011 1:37 pm

First System: N64 portable - I am going to try to make this first because there's a ton of visual guides to get me started and adapted to properly crafting a solid piece of machinery. I want to learn to do this right and really hone my skills.

This will be a very detailed work log.

Image

Goals:
Make very small
4+ hrs battery life
Include a headphone jack, volume controls, rumble pack/ memory card, expansion pak, av tv connector, charger/batteries, 3 controller ports

Parts:
MB - N64 - PURCHASED ($10)
SCREEN/SPEAKERS - Toshiba 7" Portable DVD Player - PURCHASED - ($25) (has av in/out so i assume it works)
CONTROLS - GC joystick (PURCHASED), PS1 triggers (PURCHASED), Gameboy d-pad/A/B/start/select buttons (PURCHASED), n64 c buttons (PURCHASED)

BATTERY - tbd
CASE - Most likely will design + commission someone once all parts are trimmed and wired
INTERNAL - rumble pack, memory card, and expansion pak, possible led lights for joystick/logo

Tools:
Dremel + drum sanding heads/blades/drillbits (PURCHASED $20)
Screwdrivers (PURCHASED)

Game Bit Screwdriver
Wires
Soldering Iron
Solder Wick
Capacitors/Resistors
Pliers
Pinsers
Wire Trimmers
Multimeter
Electrical Tape in multiple colors
Glue Gun
Sandpaper/Blocks
Screws

I'll be getting started on my work log as soon as my dremel arrives!

NOTES: the screen is 7" but I might make the whole thing horizontal anyways. This way it'll be pretty long, giving it a pretty unique shape with ease of working and game play. Hopefully it'll be short but long.

Here's my ideal N64 portable case layout (I used all the right dimesnions for a 7" screen):

EDIT: Disassembled a 1st party controller. The joystick has already been worn out.

You may want to use a third party controller so you can use a different joystick. That's what most people do.

Welcome to the forums and good luck!

Chopped up a first party controller. The hard part was separating the A+B from the C buttons! How'd I do?

Wired the controller! it works -- had to switch the ground for a+b and start buttons. What do you think??

I'm shortening the length of the wires for the controllers as suggested. I separated the controller ports. I took 2 vents from the n64 and put them together. I made a face plate for volume/contrast/brightness, I disassembled the screen and n64. I had to redesign the case. Thoughts?

I'm liking this, it is inspiring me to use my 7" screen and just deal with the massive size.

Digging it. You could buy a project box, there is a poly case that would likely hold that puppy perfectly and be a lot cheaper than a commission. Just a suggestion

I set the A, B, C pad, D pad, start buttons so they'd work with the mobo if clicked! I also cut out sections from the original controllers so I can epoxy them in when the case is ready! I've also cut out the nintendo logo... Everything fits great!

Very nice.

I like the case. Seems like a good design.

You should always do the case work first however. The electronics come last...
This way, if you make a mistake in wiring to short, you do not have to de-solder and start over...

I'd recommend ditching the upside down cart slot
