Help deciding

Post by ninjamonkey » Wed Jun 08, 2011 9:56 am

Ok, so I have a gamestop gift card to use. I was thinking of pre-ordering one of the game displayed at E3. It between Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3 and Rage.

Rage - I like the combination of FPS and demolition derby. Its makes for a different sort of FPS. Online play those is kind of skimpy. The online multiplayer is good, but also only 6 players online demolition derby. There are other modes but its just vehicular combat. 2 person co-op.

Battlefield 3 - Looks nice. Seems like a it could be different. Battlefield 2 controls seem a little unresponsive to me, but still fun. I also, haven't played it on a good computer. I have to play it on low settings, so it could just be the graphics causing the slow unresponsiveness.

Modern Warfare 3 - I like COD. I like the way it plays. The Controls are nice and responsive. The modifications ability are sweet, although you can do that in Battlefield 2/3.

I will be building a new computer soon for gaming. So hardware isn't really an issue.

specs:
core i5 (second gen) 24k 3.1
1 tb hdd
4 gb ram
raedon 5670
600w psu

So what are you guys opinnion??

That's a pretty weak gpu if you're gonna try and play new games. get at least a 5770, they cost like $100 or less, there's no excuse. I don't know about Rage, but I can tell you that if you are picking between BF3 and MW3 on the PC, pick BF3. BF3 will look better and play better and is meant for PC, unlike MW3 which will probably be a console port. Don't get me wrong, I personally favor the CoD series over Battlefield but BF3 looks amazing.

I must agree. Battlefield 3 does look nicer and would probably play better. I think I will pre-order BF3. Probably wait till the others become cheaper.

Also, thanks for the advice on the gpu.

Edit: Gigabyte any good on the gpu end? How about Raedon HD 6570?

I pre-ordered both for my Xbox 360

I dunno about Modernwarefare 3. All the original Infinity Ward developers left and got some other weirdo company to do the work for them. Stupid. Probably just ruin the entire thing. It is even based off of the exact same engine as MW2. No big improvements at all...

Maybe Activisions plan is to end Call of Duty and make money by focusing on a new title, Battlefield. Different story, etc...

That card is just as bad. you need to get something that's as powerful as the 5770 and not ridiculously expensive so that includes:

5770
5830
5850
5870
6830
6850 (I would pick this one)
6870

Generally the first number will be either a 4,5, or 6 followed by either a 7,8, or 9. For example:

6570 = 6000 Series and the performance level is low-end because the second number is a 570. This number should be a 770 or higher if you want anything decent for gaming on medium-high graphics at mid-high resolutions. Always get a card with GDDR5 because GDDR3 really limits a cards performance. Don't let the 6570 trick you into thinking its better than a 5770 just because its newer. The 5770 would smoke it.

And since you are buying mid-range cards, any brand is generally okay. Sapphire, XFX, Gigabyte, Asus, etc will all be fine. Just read reviews on Newegg. Of course I listed only AMD cards, Nvidia has some good cards too but they cost more, so I usually exclude them from sub $750 rigs.

You shouldn't need a PCI riser unless you're trying to reuse an OEM desktop case.

The problem with buying the radeon hd 6850. I can't find a low profile ready version of it. I am making a mobile gaming computer. the big form factor graphics cards aren't going to work. I though the 6570 would be good for what I am trying to do. It has a higher number radeon card and is low profile ready.

Edit: Then, I need a better Low Profile graphics card. I was kind of hoping not to have to buy from online. I was looking at http://www.microcenter.com/. And it needs to be cheap or its a no fly zone. I am paying half for the build and my father the other.

Mobile as in? Your CPU heatsink will probably be taller than the GPU.

Mobile as in computer that is portable with a monitor attached.

This is the cpu i have picked out http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0319748

edit: how about the radeon hd 6670? This site http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html says its not that bad; its up there on the chart.

Why not get a laptop? :P

I would just use a normal desktop case and put a ~17" LCD on the side.

Have one. its crappy on the specs side, yet its labeled as a gaming laptop. I was looking to make my own laptop (in a way). I was trying to make something different. Also, would to the 6670 be good to use??

Edit: I found a better one - I think - the EVGA GeForce GTX 550 TI 1GB DD5 should be better.
