Gameboy - Do not use recharable batteries? *SOLVED*

Post by Haunted360 » Tue May 10, 2011 10:10 pm

Hi. Why does it specifically say to not use rechargeable batteries in a Gameboy Pocket, Colour etc...

All electricity / power is the same from a Nickel Cadmium to a Lithium Ion right?

Is it because rechargeable batteries die slowly where as alkaline batteries will just 'cut out' and this ruins the hardware in the GB?

I know NiCd batteries (which were the commonplace rechargeables at the time) didn't work well at all with my Gameboy Color. NiMH AA's work fine though in mine.

Alkaline batteries push 1.5 volts, most NiMh and NiCd batteries only get up to around 1.2 volts. Their theory might be the lower voltage makes it perform poorly, or run out of juice sooner.

Honestly I don't remember ever having a problem running my Game Boy Color or Advance off NiMh rechargeable AAs.

I always used nimh batteries in my color and advance unless I had some alkalines with too little juice to be useful in anything else.

True.

*EDIT* Solved (bumped - sorry)

(From Wikipedia for the SEGA Nomad)

"Rechargeable AA batteries were not recommended due to voltage problems (as Ni-Cds provide 1.2V instead of the 1.5V that alkaline batteries output)"
