Would it be possible to use a laptop dvd drive with an xbox?

Post by ssmith43654 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 7:03 am

I have made an xbox laptop, and I know that the only think making the laptop so thick, is the height of the tray loading dvd drive.

If I were to replace it with one thin dvd drive, like a laptops have today, would it work? And what drive would I get. I thought: would it be as simple as taking the xbox dvd driver pcb board, and then just plugging everything in (motor, laser, slider assembly, etc?) I know one of the biggest problems is working out the eject tray signals, as the tray of a laptop dvd drive just clicks open, and then is pulled the rest of the way.

I thought this might be fun to do, and would be nice to get this working, and then it would be possible to build a really slim xbox laptop, and even maybe fit some batteries into it!

Thanks,

Seb Smith

Nope. You'd need a near exact match of the laser, servos and spindle motor, unless the driver board can self-calibrate to a different assembly (unlikely).

ok, so plugging everything in wouldn't work then, what about would swapping the laser, servos, etc for the stock ones work?

on the other hand, would it be possible to use an dvd drive, that isnt using the stock pcb with the xbox 360? after all, the connection is just a standard sata. but there would be a problem with cd keys, how would I overcome this?

also could anybody recommend a slim dvd drive that could possibly have the chance of working?

thanks for the help,

seb smith

It is possible, but it's no where near simple.
