Wondering how I can do a mod to my n64 to run off batteries

Post by FLAPJACKDAN » Tue Feb 08, 2011 4:43 pm

Well I have a field trip coming up and I have a portable tv and a nintendo 64. I'm wondering how I can do a small mod to make the nintendo run off batteries. I don't want to do a mod that will require opening it up just yet since I don't want to risk frying it (It's going to be used in a portable project later on). Here's a picture of how I would like it if it can be done:

Hmm... you could possibly take the power supply (the power cord, thing) and use the box to house batteries and a converter... if you wanted somebody to do it for you, I would be willing to. Then you'd just need a way to power the screen.

Well the screen runs on its own battery.

OK, that makes things easier - you only have to worry about the n64. I would suggest taking the power supply brick (a dead one you don't use), taking it apart, putting batteries and a regulator in there, then closing it all up.

Cool I already have an unused power supply in my closet. Also which kind of regulator should I use (I might have one).

TI PTH08080 and I wouldn't suggest just using any batteries, because they would die quite fast. Here's a calculator to help you determine how long batteries last in the n64:

Would a PTH08000WAZ work? I already have an unopened one with me. Or does it need to be 8080?

As long as it can put out 3.3v pretty efficiently, it ought to work.

Since I don't want to open up the n64 how do I wire up the end of the power brick? The part that connects to the n64. Heres a couple pictures of it:

Uh you can't I don't think.

See how it has a little resistor and capacitor (I think they are)?

If you put voltage through the grey ribbon side then plug the black plug into your N64, they will alter the voltage somehow because of the 'unknown' resistor and capacitor...

You can by-pass them though, by soldering straight onto the plug or moving the ribbon cable in that fact higher.

But as my memory goes, I think it needs 12.x volts and 3.3 volts. So if you want a very very quick portable, it may require you to have 2 batteries.

1 @ 12.x volts (the x is the second digit number. I mean, I think it needs 12.2 volts. Should say on the power pack)
1 @ 3.3 volts

or

You can quickly solder up a voltage regulation circuit and just use the 12.x volt battery. What the voltage regulator will do is convert the 12.x voltage separately down to 3.3 volts. The rest of the voltage loss will be converted to heat which I think, needs a small heatsink. But look around on these forums because I know I am wrong 8)

As for the screen, if it has a separate voltage input - then you can just plug that in. That is, if it needs 12 volts. If it needs 7 volts or something, then your in trouble again. Also, if the screen is not LED modded, it will consume A LOT of power from your battery draining it faster.

(Forum members, please correct me if I am wrong!
A N64 needs both 12.x volts and 3.3 volts right?
Oh and if your screen has a separate power supply then forget the above info)

To me, there's no point and you will be rushing. Things will snap, break and fail when you even get to try it.

Better of bringing a GameBoy for now with a lot of batteries

The portable tv already has it's own battery. It's one of those portable tvs with A/V input such as this one http://www.amazon.com/Axion-AXN-8701-7- ... B001FWYLLG" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So can you rephrase what you said for me? Because what you typed confused me a bit. Also what would be a good battery to use? I'm not referring to disposable one I'm talking about a battery that can power a n64 for atleast an hour such as this: http://www.batteryspace.com/polymerli-i ... witch.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but a bit cheaper and could be found at a retail store.

Oh uh, well the batteries you will need will need a voltage regulator.

So you will need 12 volt batteries at lets say, 5000 mAH for enough gameplay time. The higher the mAH, the longer the battery will last for you to play.

Then, do what Snipeye said and put them into the power brick or some other case work you may have such as a lunchbox maybe???

Read around the forums and do a search. There are hundreds of these topics...

No. 7.4V (two lithium batteries) is fine, IIRC the 12v line is sent to a 5V regulator and to the sound amp, which isn't noticeably worse in quality.
