Xbox laptop: strength, reliability, and durability?

Post by ssmith43654 » Sat Jan 29, 2011 1:30 pm

Hi, I am making an xbox laptop (see my blog page). I have made all the case out of 5mm foamex/sintra with it being doubled or tripled thickness in some places, although the bottom is only 1 big 5mm sheet. When everything is installed (but the motherboard isnt screwed down), if I lift the laptop from 1 corner the whole case bends slightly. I am very worried as in the future this might lead to this:

If the motherboard was screwed down would it support the laptop more?

If the screen was on would it support the laptop more?

If it bends a lot while carrying around etc in the future, could it break some solder joints on the motherboard and cause RROD?

Would I need to put a piece of aluminium under it to support it and how? (I noticed only in ben's first laptop he uses aluminium, in the others he doesn't)

Thanks

If you screwed the mobo down it would help prevent all of these problems.
Adding a sheet of aluminium will give further support

if i were to screw it down, the stress would be then placed on the motherboard. if the motherboard is bent are there likely cold solder joints form?

thanks

i dont quite understand the last sentence but here goes..
from what i understand your asking if it will rrod if it is screwed down (which might bend the board)
its unlikely.
out of curiosity how would you keep the mobo from sliding around the case if you dont screw it down?

thanks for the answer, thats fine if it wont give me rrod then! I never planned on not having the board screwed down, I am screwing it down with thos little studs from under the heatsinks! I screwed them into the plastic, with a little JB weld, and then place the motherboard on top and screw the little black star screws to hold the motherboard, i find it works great just now!

Thanks for all the help!

If you wanted to reinforce it some more, adding some support beams (for lack of a better word) across the width of the case would make it flex less.

i had to add support beams to the back of the screen so the hinges didn't rip the plastic of! It works now, I finished it today, here is a video of it working -
