Xbox laptop 5V switched power?

Post by ssmith43654 » Mon Jan 24, 2011 12:55 pm

Hi,

I am making an xbox laptop and my cpu fan is running on the 5v unswitched line, this means every time i plug the console/laptop in the cpu fan comes on.

Is there any points on the circuit board I can pull a 5v switched line from?
Or can I hook some sort of transformer to convert the 12v line into 5v, and which transformer would I use?

Thanks in advance,

Seb Smith

I'd run the fan from the 12v line and use a 7805 (5-volt voltage regulator) to get the fans to run quieter, simple and easy.

Fight MS Paint abominations! If you don't have a camera, go here, and pick something 3 megapixels or higher.

The 7805 are going to create a lot of heat. I would do what humak suggested.

i will be powering the cpu fan and the audio from 1 7805 regulator and I am going to test it tomorrow, how much heat do the regulators work up to?

also would I be able to use one of these regulators to power the screen driverboard or would it put it under too much stress?

I really don't want to take any more power straight from the 5V line because the transformer power brick only outputs 1A.

Could I put the regulator on a small heatsink to cool it? Would this work?

Thanks for the help!

Yes you will need a small heatsink.

thanks for the link, if I were to use an 780 with one of those heastinks, would it be able to power the screen driver board?

thanks

Hello,

after only 5 minutes of running a laptop fan and sound amplifier from a 7805 regulator with a heatsink it got incredibly hot, I think I will pull the 5V from the dvd line, but I have some questions:

Will the dvd drive still work normally if I run a small fan and a sound amplifier board from its 5v power?

Will the power supply be able to cope with it?

Will it cause overheating on the motherboard?

Is this a 5v switched line, so it comes on when the system starts up?

Thanks, it would be really helpful if you could give me your advice!

it should, the DVD power is a delicate part of the console, it's reccomended that you only run small thing from it e.g. LEDs
I run a fan and LEDs from the DVD power in my personal box, so it should be good
Will the power supply be able to cope with it?
yes
Will it cause overheating on the motherboard?
highly unlikely
Is this a 5v switched line, so it comes on when the system starts up?
yes

And that's how you do 360 8)

the fan is a 1.6W laptop cpu fan, that should be ok?

I have decided to run the amp from the 5v unswitched line so as not to put too much stress on the dvd power line

I am not using any 7805 regualtors now and will test it shortly...

All my leds have ressitros inside them pre attached and all run on 12v, i will be putting about 10 altogether in the case to light things up a bit :D :D

Thanks

I just tested it,

the xbox started up, but stopped at the startup screen, after 10 seconds it showed me e64, with one red light. I panicked and thought I had killed my console or something, but looked the error code up and found it was the dvd drive. So I disconnected the little fan, and powered up fine!

Looks like I am going to have to use a 7805 regulator for that fan...

Any alternatives to a 7805 regulator?

Thanks
