led modded psone screen question

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

led modded psone screen question

Post by MarioOwnsAll » Sun Dec 20, 2009 3:57 pm

Ok as far as I know all you have to do to led mod the psone screen is remove the backlight and replace it with 3-4 leds and then wire the leds up to a power source. I don't really have a good guide to do this. Does anyone know of a good guide to led mod the psone screen?

Follow Ben's book's guide, but rather than actually hooking them up like the book says, wire them like this:

Other than the fact the you need a resistor for each LED, Ben's got it right. Except, I'm not sure what Ohm he says to use, but you need 22ohm.

This guide is one of the best. Starts with taking apart the screen:

If you use the guide hailrazer posted swap the 10ohm resistor for a 20ohm.

Ok, I got the screen taken apart and all I need is the leds and the resistor so I should be good with installing the leds but I am having some trouble with removing the two plugs on the bottom of the circuit board of the psone screen. Does anyone know how to remove them? I don't want to break it.

This is something where you have to be VERY careful...
extremetech.com wrote:6. Look for the ribbon cable clamp on the back of the board, as seen in Figure 4-23. Place one edge of a thin flat-head screwdriver under the brown tab on one side. Slowly twist your screwdriver so that the edge of the screwdriver head lifts up the brown tab. The clamp will lift off.

This kind of ribbon cable clamp is very easy to break. Take your time when opening it to avoid snapping off the white tabs on either side. If they do break, you can hot-glue the ribbon cable back in, but that's not a desirable scenario.

I think he means the white power and AV plugs. Sometimes they are glued in. If not just wiggle them side to side while pulling them outward.

Ooh, sorry, I didn't read over that well enough. Sorry about that. But yeah, for those plugs I just wiggled them to get them loose and them pulled them out by the wires.

So any resistor would work as long as it is 20 ohm?

It needs to be the right resistor for the led you are using.

For a lot of those sold on Ebay it is a 30ohm resistor per led. Just use a led resistor calculator to figure it out.

And do you need one for each led?
