PocketPlay - PstwoPortable
I was not satisfied with my last psone portable (which was made from balsa wood and resembled a cake), so now after finishing my snesp, I have decided to start a ps2 portable, using a zn-40 case. I will update regularly with progress updates.
There will be two internal 3.7v li-ion 4235 mah batteries, a cd cover, lcd modded screen and will all look great. I'm hoping it will be the best pstwo portable out there. I will likely get it done sometime in april/may. The majority of the work will take place on the case, incorporating the disk tray from the psone console into the back. I hope to also go in depth with this worklog, providing references for beginners.
Here is the LED modded screen:
(Make sure to use a 33 ohm resistor and not 10 ohms that Ben describes in the book)
Here is the zn-40 case + epoxy putty. Last time, I used bondo, which cracked easily. I'm trying the putty now, which is working nice. However, it smells like crap.
After applying the putty, sanding and then applying Bondo spot and glaze putty:
Bondo spot and glaze putty is for cracks and other imperfections and does not provide structure like the epoxy putty.
Sanded:
Make sure you sand thoroughly leaving a smooth surface. You don't want bumps anywhere. The bondo putty should help.

Re: PocketPlay (Pstwo Portable Worklog)
Next, I used a dremel to cut pieces out of a psone controller. I then made the appropriate cuts in the case and superglued and epoxied them in.
Cut everything smaller than the needed size so you can expand it as needed. It is better to have a smaller hole than a hole that is too big. Wet your fingers when using the putty to apply it easier. For gaps, use the epoxy. For small cracks, use the bondo putty.
Here is the back of the case. I epoxied in the front section of the psone case. It still opens and closes like intended. This will protect the cd and allow me to set the system down when I need a break. I need to do a lot more sanding, but you can get the general idea of what I am doing.
Back to the front:
The bondo putty looks like frosting. Mmmm... frosting.
Mmmmm.....sanded frosting
More to come later

SAND. FILL. SAND. FILL. SAND SOME MORE
looking good, i like what youre doing with the lid. just make sure you get it all smooth and get any low spots filled in.

Very nice so far! I like your incorporated lid design. Your sanding's looking good so far. Don't give up on it, though. It gets dull as hell, but the end result is so worth doing it right!

When you've sanded until you want to kill yourself, you're about half way. Looking really awesome!

once in a while, wipe the sanding dust off, make sure its clean and dry then give it a light coat of primer. it will help you see your sanding progress MUCH more easily.

Re: PocketPlay (Psone Portable Worklog)
As of now, I have decided to choose a playstation 2 over a psone. After finding out it can run on the same voltage and be made smaller, the switch was obvious. I will be using the same case for the portable.
Here is the components desoldered, leaving just enough room to fit in the zn-40:
Could a mod please move this topic?

I know a slim PS2 won't run on 7.2v, I've tried using my PSone adapter on it, and it won't work. What's the voltage on your batteries?

This is the newest slim with an intenal power supply. I tested it and it runs off of 7.2v fine.

Huh, cool! Didn't even realize that they made one with a built in supply! Must have slipped under my radar a while ago.gamefreak11 wrote:This is the newest slim with an intenal power supply. I tested it and it runs off of 7.2v fine.

Re: PocketPlay (Pstwo Portable Worklog)
I really like how you used the PSOne lid for the back. It's a nice callback to what came before the PS2. Nice work, I'm excited to see this done.
I have nothing clever to say here. Sorry.
