ADHD? Adderall?

Post by HotDog-Cart » Sat Aug 28, 2010 3:12 am

Hey guys.

I have some pretty bad ADHD. And I took adderall. (Prescribed by doctor.)

Which explains why Im posting at 5:11 AM, and not even tired.

Is anyone else here on ritalin, adderall, dexadrin?

Does anyone else here have ADHD?

You don't need Drugs to keep your mental structure (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) under control. In other words, do not let people use you as a guinea pig for drugs and stuff.

Try and be calm, in control and power your mind over your body.

Do things that YOU like to do, such as Portablizing.

Try and also keep calm as I said above, when it comes to doing things that you don't want to do. Such as packing dishes, etc.

I do not have it, so I have no idea what it is like...
But I do know what it IS like (if that makes sense).

Just helping with some advice is all

bold parts, if you dont have ADD then you have NO IDEA what its like. ive been struggling with ADD since i was in elementary school, they said i had it but nobody ever followed up on diagnosing me. i didnt get a diagnosis until i was 19 years old. so i had to go all through elementary, junior high, highschool and a year of college while trying to deal with not being able to control my ability to focus, stay on task, attention span and motivation. for some people they can manage without meds but i've been trying to do that my whole life, the only reason i got by as well as i did is because i have a fairly high IQ and was smart enough to pass without really having to try.

ADHD and ADD-I (inattentive type) are two different but related things. ADHD kids tend to be hyperactive and have problems staying on task, ADD-I is less obvious and more easily overlooked because we just look like we are lazy or dont care when its more like we just CANT pay attention, stay focused and keep up motivation to accomplish things without getting distracted.

i'm currently unmedicated but i have tried concerta and ritalin, but methylphenidate (the active ingredient in those drugs) has more negative side effects for me than benefits. ive also tried strattera, which is an SNRI (Serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) but serotonergic drugs mess with me in ways i dont like either. the ony drug i have tried that worked well for me was Adderall, good old fashioned mixed amphetamine salts  the only problem is i cant afford the prescription for it :wtf: and its hard to get because its a schedule II drug

TL;DR dont say people dont need drugs to treat what really IS a valid mental disability, some people might be able to deal with it drug free but not all of us are so lucky

Agreed with triton. Its very hard to know what poeple with ADHD and ADD go through. ADHD, for example isnt just a small, unrecognized disorder as it used to be. (I'm really hoping Marshallh will comment. He's a great and wise guy, and I know he may have some stories.)

I have really bad ADHD. Its permanant, and will be with me for life. (Most likely.)

I'm 19, and was diagnosed last year. Just started "treatment" now.
(I hope this "drug" talk, is okay. Its not bad stuff.)

Adderall is an amphetamine, somewhat related to methamphetamine. (But different as it raises dopamine, and norepinphrene in your brain.)

It gives you a surge of adrenaline, energy, and brain power.

Now you may think,

"What the.... Why are they giving people with ADHD a prescription drug that gives MORE energy."

Simple.

Adderall gives energy, but in lamens terms, its energy that equals out your chemicals in your brain. It takes all this untamed, wild energy, and converts it into controlled mental and physical energy. (Kinda like if you were to drink 10 cups of coffee, and then eat a bunch of tuna. BUT not have any jitters from the caffine.)

Now, I don't do much portables anymore due to ADHD. I cant focus on it. But maybe now I can.

I don't mean for this to be "drug" talk. I just wanna see if anyone else here has ADD, or ADHD, and has taken medication before. (and how it has affected them.)

@Triton: This is why I love Canada. Adderall is not on any banned list, and my prescriptions are FREE. (My moms work covers them.)

Oh, and theres two types of adderall. Which type did you take, Triton? Extended Release (XR) or Instant Release (IR).

(20 mg of XR, releases 10mg in the first hour. And 10mg in about 6-8. 20mg of IR releases it all at once, but it disipates from your body quicker.)

I have ADHD, but I've never taken anything for it. Sometimes I swing from compulsive and hyperfocused to indifferent and disorganized. What I tend to do is make lists (of the hundreds I have lying around) on the days I dont feel focused, and on days I feel compulsive try to complete as much as I can. The problem is since the AD part kicks in and I start about ten things I can complete if it were the only things left individually, but then I get scatter brained and forget about them.

Everyone has their crux in life, its how you deal with it that will make or break you. I was diagnosed as a child and now I'm 30. My daughter has the same symptoms so I wont be surprised when I get a call from school about it. I most likely wont put her on meds because I myself never used them. It's not a "condition" if no one points it out to you. I had no clue for a long time, I just assumed I lacked focus. Now I know how to channel it an I think its helped me in the long run.

BTW, I know what you mean about stimulants. I was confused too. Coffee, mountain dew, makes me sluggish, but plain water tends to do more for me.

Woah, weapon. I never knew you were 30. Right on buddy.

I was put on meds, because its next to impossible for me to focus in school. One minute I can be hard at work, but the moment I overhear something, or someone talks to me, I like blabber my mouth off, and dont do the work.

They put me on meds, because this would be an inacceptable way for me to act in College. I want to pass my Computer Systems Tech course, without being a burden on the class, classmates or teachers. (But I will still socialize.)

Ive noticed some small things, since adderall has no intake time on your body (Like your body doesnt need to get used to it. So it works on the first day, unlike other meds that work after the first week.):

1) I've been REALLY happy. Like I'm fairly optimistic. I hardly ever get sad. But my current mood is like an elevated happyness. Not a care in the world. I feel super generous, and I recognize flaws in my self now. (I'm usually part narcisstic/full of myself.)

2) A lot of energy. I took adderall at 5pm on the first day. Stay up till 6am. Wasnt tired, but went to bed because I just wanted to. Woke up at 11am, and didnt even feel exausted. (Usually I'm groggy with 8 hours of sleep. 5 hours would DESTROY me. But it didnt.)

3) I seem to be more talkative, but with a one track mind. Like, instead of being talkative and going on about a million different things, I seem to be somewhat the same talkative level, but I seem to focus on ONE general subject. (But this means, I can also keep going ON and ON about the same thing, because I need to stay focused on something.)

4) I seem to be "speeding" as my mom calls it. Like, talking fast, moving fast, etc.

Again, all of these could be just until school starts and I have priorities to focus on, and until my body gets used to it.

I really hope marshallh sees this, and can give some input!

(On the plus side, I've been beatboxing effeciently to Sonic 2 for like an hour now yay.)

HD-C. I would make sure you are getting your proper amount of vitamins. Especially the B-vitamin complex. This isn't a cure for ADHD (meds arnt either) but there is no side affects to B-vitamins. I recommend everyone to take a B-vitamin supplement. Makes you feel so much better. I know that I won't be able to concentrate unless I have taken them.

Well said

I was just saying that taking Drugs to help with ADHD will shorten your life, and EVERY DRUG HAS A SIDE EFFECT. As well as your body getting used to the drug will have a huge impact on your life too.

Anyway, I better not get into this because like I said - I do not have it, and so I do not know what it is like. But I do have an understanding that is...

Shut up if you don't know what you're talking about, PLEASE!

Dextroamphetamines have been used to treat disorders for over 100 years. Yeah, there's side effects, but there's also NO PROOF that they shorten one's life. Like you said, you do not have it, you do not know what it is like. Based on everything you've posted in this thread so far, though, I can see you have NO understanding. Just shut up already.

As for me....

Bipolar and suicidal since the age of six, diagnosed with ADD-I shortly thereafter. I've been on drugs for as long as I can remember, and I'm the healthiest one in my family, if not the sanest. If it wasn't for the damn pills, I wouldn't be able to hold a job or go back to school.

I have a mild case of ADD, and did try Adderall in middle school. On a good day I was like a 70s burnout, on a bad day it was like being on horse tranquilizer. :(

Dang bic. I feel like Ive just drank like a ton of energy drinks. But without any crash.

And guys, please. If you don't have it, then its best not to try to give advice. Its hard to diagnose or prescribe something that you dont have. (Unless your a doctor)

Also: I used to take a multivitamin. One of the best in the US. Made by Quixtar, called Double X. Had a ton of b-complex vitamins, and didnt help. If anything, the B vitamins gave me more energy and I wasnt controlled.

I was never diagnosed with anything, but Ive done a bunch of ritalin and adderall once. Its a pretty good buzz IMO. It definitely can help you work hard or focus... Just sometimes you end up focusing on porn for 5 hours.

The stuff has a very high black market value, Ive seen people pay $10/pill.

Im pretty sure they suggest not taking your adderall in the evening... for reasons you have discovered. You basically described a speed trip. It feels great eh? Its hella addictive. Watch yourself... Once your body gets used to it, you might just want to do more to feel the same. It creeps up on you...

I find that these drugs destroy my appetite, to the point where Im always sooooo hungry when Im on them but I cant eat a damn thing. Its a pretty bad feeling.

Yep. I lost 4 pounds. Most likely because I didnt eat ALL day. My stomach was EMPTY. I still have no apetite, but I forced myself to eat.
