boNES: Portable NES

Post by Life of Brian » Tue May 25, 2010 12:29 am

I'm at the halfway mark right now, but I thought I'd share (like I always do :D ). This is a bare-bones NES portable (boNES for short) I'm building entirely from parts I already had on hand. That's right, with the exception of some 3/8" screws I need to pick up tomorrow morning to finish mounting the controls, I have not purchased any parts specifically for this portable. I have that much in "leftovers" from past projects or spare parts I bought thinking, "This might come in handy someday." Well, today is that day!

You get a cookie if you can name A)where I got this enclosure box from and B)what model number it is:

NES carts are friggin' huge:

The cartridge takes up pretty much ALL of the portable's interior:

About time I put that 3.5" DX screen to use. I planned on using it in my next SNES project, but I'm still ironing out details on that portable...
Image

It's flipping hard to cut the corners to match the cartridge. My hat's off to those who have successfully done it before:
Image

I don't have any batteries for this portable yet, but when I do I'll attach them in some tasteful fashion to the back here:

I plan on finishing this tomorrow. If I finish it by 5PM Central then I'll have made a portable in 24 hours - a first for me!

I think the case is a polycase SL-64P or a SL-68P?

Now we will have portable speed building competitions!
I have nothing clever to say here. Sorry.

Didn't shockslayer make one of his n64 portables in 7 hours?
Also, great looking portable! I'll be waiting for this one...

Yes, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist with my projects so moving at this pace is rare for me. On a similar note, I did not finish this portable in the 24 hours I had hoped for, but oh well. I had initially thought that using this NOAC would allow me to just stick it into the portable's case without needing to do a cartridge slot relocation, but in order to get the cart to slide as far down as possible I decided to go ahead and rewire it.

I'm about half done with the cart slot relocation. This is taking a while...

Power jack and headphone jack added to the back:

I have some chores I need to get done on my day off work so I'll be putting this aside for now. Maybe this evening and tomorrow morning before work I'll see what I can get done. It's really starting to shape up!

Not in 24 hours, but still it's much faster than your older stuff. Looks good.

The cartridge slot in this thing is TIGHT. Well, not overly tight but very snug. Look at what I can do!

^And I don't even have the cartridge jack inside the portable yet... You won't have worry about the game shorting out with this portable, that's for sure.

That's real good work, especially for trying to do it in 24 hours.

Yes, it was put in my desk drawer and there it has sat ever since :P

The screen doesn't seem to be working, and I can't get the NOAC to boot up. I need to tinker with both to see what the heck is going on, and so I moved on to more interesting things (see CNC SNESp) for a little while. I'm moving on Saturday so it will be a week or two before I'm back in the swing of things.

I need to finish it up so I can add my SNESp and this portable at the same time so I can stretch everyone's screen that isn't a widescreen :P It's turning into quite a trophy list, isn't it?
