PHP or perl?

Post by Sparkfist » Fri Jun 06, 2008 8:09 pm

Ok I have 2-3 weeks off from school and then really nothing important happening over this summer, might as well learn a new language.

Which of the two, PHP and perl, do you think I should invest my time learning?

And lets make something clear, I hardly know any HTML, so mixing PHP with that is not going to happen.

I am a geek.

Depends on what you want out of it. If you have java or c experience, php would be a piece of cake syntax wise, just gotta learn the ins and outs/quirks.
Not a huge fan of perl syntax, but it's better for non-web stuff I think.

Agreed with gannon, but PERL has some good/easy uses for accessing external web pages and storing external temporary cookies, etc.

Depends as always.

Well, I hear Perl is much harder... personally, I needed to learn PHP for Web design purposes, and I love it. There's nothing it can't do (that I need it to do)! :P Plus, it's integrated tightly with MySQL if you need databases...

But, Gannon's right; It really depends on what you want to do. PHP isn't very useful offline.

Fight MS Paint abominations! If you don't have a camera, go here, and pick something 3 megapixels or higher.
