The difference between the two psone screens?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

The difference between the two psone screens?

Post by Yenuze »

I just have a quick question about the two different kinds of psone screens.
I think i read somewhere (maybe I just imagined it) that the rectangular one has worse picture quality than the more commonly used round one.
Is that true? Is there some other disadvantages or differences?

The square ones are thrid-party (not Sony) screens and vary in quality. Since they were mainly competing against Sony on price, they are typically made with lower quality components and sometimes even have passive-matrix LCDs leading to blurring when there's on-screen movement. The round Sony ones are all of pretty decent quality(be careful, there are round case third-party screens too). The only advantage that third party screens typically have is that they usually have RCA jacks to plug in external devices, instead of having to use a RCA to 3/4 prong 1/8" cable. Not all third-party screens are bad of course, but enough are to assume bad until proven otherwise, particularly with Sony and Zenith (a recase of the Sony PSOne screen) screens being fairly cheap.

Speaking of bad rectangular screens, avoid the Gamecube screen. The picture quality is terrible.

Let's post this link again!

Get that one. The Zenith 5" screen is exactly the same as the Sony PSOne screen. I've personally bought from that seller, as have many other forum members here. $43 free shipping is about the cheapest you can get.

Fight MS Paint abominations! If you don't have a camera, go here, and pick something 3 megapixels or higher.

Well, I live in Sweden so the shipping would actually cost more than the screen itself. And I don't want it that badly. Thx anyways.
