Just a thought on refurbing N64 analog sticks.

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

If someone could replicate the gears and stick of the analog stick say made out of metal? would that work in the controller and would that reduce the wear?

It would work. You could probably even cast it. Machining takes time, and time is expensive.

But in the end, why bother? There are so many other sticks that are just as easy to replace them with, as long as you're not working with first party hardware.

The plastic parts deteriorate from being banged against each other. The reason the dead zone is so loose is because the supporting plastic that used to keep it still just isn't there anymore.

Best off just getting a third-party pad and putting a proper stick in it.

SS did this when making the X64. He later used a Wii analog, though...
