WIIp it
Moderator:Moderators
Ok, currently looking into using a LM2577-12 for converting my battery into a suitable voltage. Anyone know of better 5V to 12V converters?

If you make/buy a separate low voltage audio amp, you'll save yourself a whoooooole lot of juice.
7.4v->5v->12v is reaaaaaaaally inefficient. If anything, you should do 7.4v->12v.

huh? Where did 7.4V come from all of a sudden?

Re: WIIp it
If it was 11.4v, you wouldn't have to step it up, and if it was 3.7v, you couldn't use a 5v-12v converter. I thought it was implied.gannon wrote:Just splurged and bought a lipoly battery today, it's pretty large, but has huge capacity.

My batteries are 5V 18Ah, so looking for a step-up converter that can handle 12V at at least 2A

Re: WIIp it
If they are lithium batteries, they are not 5v, unless they are already internally regulated. A lithium cell, be it lithium-ion or lithium-polymer, is around 3.7v, regardless of amperage. Packs only come in multiples of that. If you are unsure what is in your battery pack, you should probably check.

I know that much, but it's all integrated in with the internal protection circuitry. This is a fairly expensive battery and I'm not about to void the warranty just for a small increase in efficiency, especially with its current capacity

Re: WIIp it
forgotten what its called but dimension enginering staretd selling this adjustable voltage regulator that would step up or regualte any voltage (within a range) to a set voltage i.e 12 v, it could handle 3 amps continous so 1 or 2 of these shoudl runa wii p froma single cell lipo
Re: WIIp it
so, is your battery and energizer xp18000?

Saw some earlier post on the size of the DVD Drive. Why not skip it all together an go with a strictly HDD system? That should save you tons of space.
I am currently working on commisioning a Wii Laptop and if I go for it, I am going to go with HDD only.

but no, that means! MODCHIPS, AHHHHHH (*melts*). On a serious note, no modchips here lol. Please post picys fo your wiip if you go ahead with it , and welcome to the forum.Alucard77 wrote:Saw some earlier post on the size of the DVD Drive. Long-time no progess, eh?
Finally found a screw driver to open my battery, samjc3 was right with what type it is. Ends up the screwdriver is a T7, smallest I could find for awhile around here was a T10 though.
It has 4 LiPoly cells, so I'll be pulling right off of the 14.8V line and will be getting a dc-dc converter (doubt it'd be a good idea to pull this much current through a standard 7812 or something). Not sure if the way these get charged would damage any voltage converter though, it'd be nice if it'd even work while charging without having to change the source voltage on the converter (via a relay most likely).
Looking for a nice sized component LCD for now, 12-13" 4:3 would be preferred I think

Battery doesn't seem to be holding a charge anymore...bleh (well, it holds the charge but is rapidly depleted when I hook up a drain such as my multimeter)
Also, tried to use a 7812 to test the system, but it only pumps out 11.8V, which won't boot my wii. Guess I have to wait for my dc-dc converter parts to arrive, and hope that putting my battery on the charger for awhile might fix it

Just an update, got my longer dvd drive cable in the mail today, seems to work fine. Now I can put the drive on the side that doesn't have the gc ports
Also, battery still seems dead, hopefully I can try the warranty, but I did open it..
