What's this? ANOTHER ZN-45 N64 portable? Egads!

Yep. Just blending into the crowd by adding another ZN-45 portable N64. I am proud though. This is my first case that I've actually completed. I didn't put a lot of time (or sanding) into the case. I just wanted it DONE. I'm trying to get it finished before January 29th.

I have everything I need, controls, cut-down board, batteries, screen, the whole shebang.

And some pictures! I apologize for the quality. I had to use my webcam, because I have lost my camera


The front, fitting the original stick and d-pad. I cut up the controller shell, so the buttons fit perfectly! I also got aquatinted with JB Weld. We're good friends now!


The top. Using Gamecube shoulder buttons as R and Z.


The back. An original Z button will be the L button (funny how the markings on the L and Z triggers will be in opposite places ). The cartridge will be mounted on the outside. I need to make an enclosure to cover the wires. It'll probably be out of 1/8" plexi.


Stick and D-pad. See what I meant about lack of sanding? The analog stick hole is nice and smooth and flush though.


To further prove my lack of sanding.

The painting consisted of flat white paint (for primer), black, and glossy coat. It was primer-primer-sand-primer-sand-black-sand-black-sand-gloss-gloss.

I will drill holes in the bottom for headphones/power later. It kinda slipped my mind until I already started painting

I really don't understand this "The Zn-40 is so overdone" attitude. I mean there are like 25 Zn-40 portables right? And how many Ds lite cases, how many Psp cases.... Millions !!!

I agree that it looks very good, and it has a perfect shape for portables. I guess it kinda takes away from the novelty of seeing a finished one, because it looks familiar, but that doesn't mean it looks bad or anything.

Probably. I'd like to go back and sand/repair around the button holes, and make it smoother. There are some parts were I sanded and made dips, and I want to fill those back in.

After searching around my house for a while, I realized I left my PS1 screen at college , so I can't get it wired in until the 10th or 11th when I go back from vacation.

Got a bit of work done yesterday. I put a fan in the bottom end of the case, and holes in the top end to pull air through the portable. I also got metal cut for the cartridge mount, and I'm working on something to cover the wires.


Sorry, cruddy pictures again. I'm 90% sure my camera is at college (going back today), so hopefully I can get a decent picture update.

Where would you guys suggest the best place for speakers other than on the face of the case? The bottom on either side fan perhaps?

I thought the N64 didn't need a fan? I mean, a regular N64 doesn't have one...

it needs a form of cooling. Fans are a form of cooling. Which is more suitable is entirely dependent on the circumstances.

Use enough of a heatsink arrangement and it doesn't need a fan.

My heatsink's are the exact size of the chips. I don't want to risk anything, so I put the fan in for extra safety.

And on another note, BAH!!!! I got the cartridge slot relocated, but I cannot get an image or sound! The 12v line is getting 7.2v, and it is getting the 3.3v it needs. The power LED even lights up. The chips warm up, so that is a good sign. I went through the cartridge slot relocation and checked each connection on the board and on the cartridge slot. I tugged on each of them as well to be very very sure. There are also no bridged connections on the chips, and I know I did not cut through anything important when I slimmed the board. It worked fine with the slimmed board before I relocated the cartridge slot.

Any thoughts?

Oh yes, the controller is totally wired in, and I added the battery charge port, power switch, and a PSone power port to play from wall power. The brightness buttons are between the Z button and vent holes, and volume is between the R button and vent holes.
