If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.
After seeing examples of the PSone screen LED mod, I think I agree with Hailrazer, the original backlight is more appealing to me. However, I still will need to cut the top of the board off to decrease area.
So this idea came to me. Would it be possible to cut off the top of the screen, flip it over to the backside of the board, and resolder the circuits with wiring, so that the backlight controller still functions?
Once you cut off the top of the board, the LED mod is a requirement unless you can manage to fold the board over and rewire it. If you don't fry the system but fail, the LED mod is still an option.
I want to say that Bacteria did this on his Turbographix portable. If it wasn't that one, then I'm almost positive he attempted it on another one of his projects.
Just to confirm, correct. You should see a very, VERY dark, almost nonexistant picture if you have no backlight at all. Just add an led-mod and it's back to normal
Okay, thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure the process was salvageable if I screwed up. I'm going to try it once I have all the rest of my components and can test everything.
sorry for the pseudo-bump but has anyone confirmed this method?
The above picture looks pretty reassuring. After looking at my mobo, it doesn't seem like that many traces would need relocating. Then again, I tried relocating half a GC mobo so maybe I'm not the best judge of that
In that pic, looks like the only thing really relocated was the transformer, which shouldn't be a major PITA if you decide to go that route. There's only a few traces going to it and as long as you keep the high voltage output intact and properly insulated from other things, it should be ok.
Coming Soon: Kibble's L'Ectroshop (parts and stuff FS)
Well actually, people have relocated the transformer before and had major problems. I don't remember if the problem was resolved or not, or what was thought to be the issue.

You can't make the wires too long. It will have to be fairly close to the original to work, but folding should not be a problem.
