It also refuses to play games from the DVD drive and only loads from the HDD. I managed to load DOA3 from a disc but it froze on the start screen, and I haven't got it working since. Is it an issue with the software or have I just bought an XBOX with a dead DVD drive? And if I have, is there an easy way to rip my games onto my laptop and send them to the XBOX??

Softmodded XBOX not reading discs
I recently bought a modded XBOX with a few games already on the HDD. I went out and bought a tonne of games to rip onto it (I'm far too lazy to change discs myself), but when I try and rip them it ejects the DVD drive and tells me to put a disc in

Sounds to me like the DVD drive is dead. No there is no way that your laptop can read native XBOX games. You can download and transfer via FTP the games you want. Alternatively you can get a new XBOX DVD drive. I think llamma still sells them..
and they do, they sell Samsung V B for $49.99. Not the best drive out there if I recall correctly... You could also just ask around and find a buddy who doesnt care if you steal his DVD drive. If you can find it the LG drive is the best.

LG Drives? There are no LG Drives for the original Xbox. Samsung Drives are the best DVD Drives for the original Xbox.Harlequin wrote:Sounds to me like the DVD drive is dead. You should buy one of these
I can also sell you my Samsung Drive if you offer high enough (I would do $45 Shipped). It's never failed me.
Re: Softmodded XBOX not reading discs
Lg made drives with Hitatchi branding. They are the best drives. They require one wire soldered to GND in order to read all media.
They are the source for the firmware for the LG-8160 through 8164 PC DVD converters.
Samsungs have the reputation for being the best, but they don't really deserve it any more. The first string of Sammies could play just about anything, but they have a problem with their magnet causing open/close issues. They also are far superior in their first run to the later revision Sammies, which cannot hit the same media experience. From a speed standpoint Sammies were the best as well, until the Hitatchi/LGs came along. Since the Hitatchi/LG drives were one of the last to be produced, chances are strong that they will be in better shape than a Sammie.
The LG-8163 is the best PC drive to convert, it is a shame that the LG 8164 firmware was never patched to allow dual layer native xbox disks to play, or have the identifier flashed so that they could run on non-modded XBOXs. Kind of strange to have a DVD drive that required you to mod you box so that you could play original games...

Re: Softmodded XBOX not reading discs
check the hdd and make sure the space where you are trying to save the games has enough room on it.
