Any one out here use CAD modeling to design their cases?

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Any one out here use CAD modeling to design their cases?

Post by dfukuba » Thu Aug 27, 2009 7:05 pm

Hey guys,

I've just started working on my console case with the xbox...and was wondering if anyone out here uses CAD to design their creations (no....i don't mean cardboard aided design :").

I've been using solidworks for the past 5 years, so i can't start a project with out building it up on the computer first.

If there is a sufficient amount of people out here using some kind of modeling software to create their cases, i was thinking it would be a wonderful idea to start a library of parts that other modelers can use.

Let me know if i'm not alone out here! :")

Yep, I use CAD all the time. It accurately represents what you want and it is pretty easily convertible into CNC data. I have recently been using AutoCAD and Inventor.
(Unless you were actually serious about the cardboard thing... then no. )

This thread is from almost a month ago.
I could understand if you had something worthwhile to say, but you are hardly contributing anything.

I would also like to put in a plug for Google Sketchup. It's easy to learn, free, and (as per OP's requirements) there are lots of pre-made components in the 3D Warehouse you can use in your designs. Searching, downloading, and sharing is all integrated into the program. Check out these collections of computer components:
