Just to be clear on video formats... (question)

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Just to be clear on video formats... (question)

Post by Sun-Wukong » Sat Sep 05, 2009 1:20 pm

So I've been reading around and just want to make sure I'm not missing something. RGB an VGA are the same thing, right? As in, the industry standard for computer monitors and the best possible consumer available video format? It looks like that's the case, but I'm just curious.

So RGB is actually SCART?

SCART = RGB

But RGB does not always = SCART

SCART is just the main way to get RGB.

I think you're confusing connectors and formats.

SCART is a type of connector.

VGA is a 640 x 480 RGB image standard, or more commonly on these forums, the 15 pin D-sub VGA connector.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vga" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

RGB is a signal format that separates the red, green, and blue signals for a less washed-out image than composite provides.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rgb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Follow the links, read a little, and you'll understand. Here's a tidbit:
Video Graphics Array (VGA) was the last graphical standard introduced by IBM that the majority of PC clone manufacturers conformed to, making it today (as of 2009) the lowest common denominator that all PC graphics hardware supports, before a device-specific driver is loaded into the computer. For example, the MS-Windows splash screen appears while the machine is still operating in VGA mode, which is the reason that this screen always appears in reduced resolution and color depth.

Okay, I think I get it now. RGB is any signal that separates Red, Green, and Blue in the picture, like Component and such. VGA (Video Graphics Array) is a form of that, and what I know as VGA is just a connector commonly used for it. SCART is also a connector that outputs in RGB. Am I getting it now?

Pretty much. I wouldn't define RGB that way (I'd say it's a specific signal or set of signals), but that's basically right.

RGB/SCART has horiz. sync frequency of 15khz, VGA is 31KHz. You can hook up a RGB signal to a VGA monitor but all you get is a mess - LCDs won't even sync at all. You need a scan doubler to make this work

Okay, new question. I've been reading on VGA cords, and I can't tell if the actual cords won't carry interlaced signal, or if VGA monitors won't display interlaced and a TV with a VGA port will still work with all games. I ask because I'm looking into getting one for my Wii, and i wanted to know if MadWorld (plus a lot of my GameCube games) would still work on my TV. If not I still have Component...
