Must see movies

Post by gamemasterAS » Wed Jul 29, 2009 2:02 am

So this weekend I saw a couple of classics for the first time and I decided I needed to make a thread. I propose we make a thread of films that must be seen. So lets post some great films and possibly why we like them.

Please no bad comedies or things like that.

The Godfather trilogy
http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=godfather&x=0&y=0
Simply amazing because you are so drawn in the entire time even thought the movies are all extremely wrong. Also, this has to be one of the most referenced series of all time.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073486/
The reason this movie is so good is it really shows you what the mental hospitals and treatment of the 60s were like. It also just feels very real, you have no problem believing any of it. This movie also is referenced a lot in pop culture. The episode of the Simpsons where homer is in a mental institute for example.

Good Will Hunting
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/
I don't even know what to tell you, you just have to watch it.

The Breakfast Club
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088847/
It's a movie that defines a generation. Its just an amazing movie and one I will never mind re watching.

The Shawshank Redemption
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/

Fight Club
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0137523//

Star Wars
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/

Any one else wanna give it a shot?

When I saw this title two movies came to mind:
The Shawshank Redemption (already mentioned)
Casablanca

I'm a big SciFi movie fan, but most of those I wouldn't consider 'must-see.' I definitely would not consider the Harry Potter movies at all for such a list, personally. But nor would I consider The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which I think is much better (but they would be on a must-read list). Star Wars I guess should be on there, if only for the cultural impact it's had. Maybe 2001: A Space Odyssey too, although again I'd recommend the book before I did the movie.

Blues Brothers
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Die Hard
Rocky 1
Rambo I & IV
Band of Brothers Series
Toy Story
Spinal Tap

That is it for now. I have lots more favorite movies but these I would consider must see attractions. This thread aint about your favorite movies butt movies that every movie lover should see.

If we had enough users I'm pretty sure we'd get a significant subset of all movies ever made... There are quite a few movies I'd question as being classics, much less being 'must see movies'.

If you're a computer geek you need to see:
WarGames http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086567/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and for the heck of it, add this to your netflix cue:
Colossus: The Forbin Project http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064177/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
