Just to make sure I'm fifteen it's because of the exploding gas tank issues. Sorry just had to say it.eagle5953 wrote:I would suspect that few would understand why that would be for lolz... just us geezersKurt_ wrote:I so wanted to just tailgate them for lolz.

Re: Post your Ride! (56k beware!)
According to Wikipedia, they stopped making the car in 1980, and the big court case about the rear-ending problem was in 1981.
Thus, it wouldn't be surprising if lots of people weren't aware of this - the only context I heard about it was the criticism of the way it was journalisitically covered (ie. making the cars explode for TV).

Re: Post your Ride! (56k beware!)
I know of at least two universities that teach kids about the Pinto in first year Engineering as part of the engineering ethics course.
Oh, and just for the record, I forgot y'all down south don't have snow and salt issues. 300,000km = 186k miles, which is really good when you get several feet of snow every winter, and when your roads are salted often. The rust just kills it.
About the Ford Pinto:
In some year way back when, Ford made engineers design a car that cost $2000 in a year or two or some junk.
After a few years of selling them, Ford realized the pinto had a huge problem. In a rear-end collision (these were times before crash tests were mandatory), the ford pinto's gas tank, located behind the rear-axle, got wedged forward against the axle and the undercarriage, shredding the tank with exposed bolts on the axle, and the ensuing metal-on-metal action created sparks that ignited the now-shredded gas tank. But that's not it. If hit hard enough to do this, the frame also shifted in such a way that the doors were essentially locked shut.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Y5TfgG8nm0&NR=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Ford heard about this, and did a cost analysis. They gave each life lost in a pinto accident a price ($300,000 or so), and weighed that against the cost of coming clean and fixing the problem (a $12 rubber gas tank liner for every pinto and other ford production car with a rear-axle gas tank). They decided, based on the predicted losses, to keep quiet about it.
Obviously, that didn't work. You can read up about it if you care to learn more about it.

Close, 196 straight six, got about 86,000 on the odometer, around 25 (not thousand, just 25 miles) of which I've put on and the rest from pre-2002 when it went into our garage and didn't exit for 6 years.Triton wrote:thats an AMC rambler, and id be willing to bet it has either a 232 straight 6 or a bigger V8 lol

I now have an '03 Buick Century (what can I say? I like the things), but I don't have any pictures of her handy. You know what they look like anyway... old person cars
Old people car? Well I did buy it off my grandmother. But that's besides the piont. I love that car. drives very nicely and has fairly good gas mileage. Also the interior is still in great condition.

Same here, including getting the first one from the grandparents. My Century gets decent enough mileage (27ish average), 400+ mile range, smooth ride, plenty of power, and acceptable acceleration. Very comfortable for longer trips because of the room, the A/C and heater are fantastic (old people demand it!), and dual CD player tape deck with surprisingly good stock sound system.themadhacker wrote:Old people car? Re: Post your Ride! (56k beware!)
i have a '97 ford escort wagon colored forest green. started with 80,000 in 2003 now it has well over 145,000 miles. the framework looked just fine until i decided to not pay attention a few days ago and back into a pole. no real big damage, just a tear in the plastic and a dent in the bumper.
fifth gear grinds and hasn't worked since spring. no more teeth on the sprocket. the fan in the car is loud as hell and whenever i turn on the air conditioner the entire car shakes. oh, and for some reason the shocks are out on the driver rear side so if you're sitting in the back and i hit a pothole, it's very uncomfortable. also, the passenger rear speaker is blown out. whenever i play loud bass, it farts or whatever. i find it entertaining.
this thing has taken me through six years of virtually no problems. there's some type of magic button in the brigg that when the car won't start, you push it and it'll start again. only had to use it about three times in all of the six years.
oh, i should mention it's named the death star.
all of these problems happened over the years so this thing is a beast. triton knows. hopefully driving it to mgc next year.

1989 Dodge Ram with a 5.9l Cummins turbo diesel and a 5sp. It's pretty much the most awesome truck in the world. It makes plenty of power but when I get some money I could do some upgrades to get a few hundred more horsepower
That's not my truck, but mine looks just like it.

Can't drive yet but I will probably end up with our 1996 Chevy Blazer LT. Forest green with a nice tan leather interior. 177,000 miles, we went to California twice (from Connecticut) and to florida more than five times. I've slept at least a week in that truck

Re: Post your Ride! (56k beware!)
so how many 3rd gears you go through? i had one of those with the 5sp manual and a v6 and i blew through 3 3rd gears, a set of second gear syncros, and a clutch in the course of a year. just standard driving, no hoonage here.RockNRoll! wrote:1989 Dodge Ram with a 5.9l Cummins turbo diesel and a 5sp. Haven't had any tranny problems yet, but I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for that. Sounds like you got a lemon.
