I grabbed a Casio TV-570 (one of the TFT screens listed in Ben's book) for $10 so it's already happening a little bit. People are still BIN'ing crappier screens at higher prices for some reason haha.
Re: DTV SWITCHOVER IS NIGH
Only if NBC makes their way to my digital receiver. I JUST got Conan back on my TV at night and I don't want to lose it because of the damn digital switchover. Right now I only get NBC in analogwallydawg wrote:It's finally here, tomorrow at 2pm (unsure of which time zone lol).

Re: DTV SWITCHOVER IS NIGH
ABC was the only one that really gave us issues - apparently they gave many others in the community issues, too, since they're now working to improve their signal, supposedly.
I'm not terribly pleased with digital, but I've gone over that before. Kind of sad to think my current TV's only going to be good (lawl) for gaming now...

Re: DTV SWITCHOVER IS NIGH
I have 4 tv's, and only one is digital. (LG 32" class 1080p LCD HDTV) The rest are just normal CRT's, but I have comcast, so I'm ready.
Cheers,

Ehh I have Time Warner, so I don't have to worry about it at all.
But our 32" CRT does have a Digital Tuner in it.

I have time warner too, but that TV that has it and all our others are crt TVs that are 15+ years old. So if we ever get rid of cable, we are gonna have to get more converter boxes.
rest in peace, Ronnie James Dio! \m/

Re: DTV SWITCHOVER IS NIGH
FINALLY
After delaying it and delaying it and putting it off some more, they're finally pulling the plug on analog TV. To be perfectly honest, I have absolutely no sympathy for people who still aren't ready. They had well over a year and a half of notice, they should have bought a converter if they still want to watch the judges and The Price is Right for free. If they still don't have a digital tuner one way or another, that's their own bloody fault.

Can't wait for all the cheap pocket TVs as well.
We do not get ABC in digital here, they better be improving their signal.

Not that I'm likely to ever have a reason to care, but what's the big advantage with digital over analog in this case? Are we seeing HD quality signal or what?

Re: DTV SWITCHOVER IS NIGH
Digital can carry full HDTV signals, and the new system only uses a relatively small portion of the UHF band. They can fit more channels in better quality than they could before.
Analog TV took up a massive chunk of the RF spectrum, and was at a fairly low frequency. Lower-frequency signals can travel further with less interference (one reason coverage for DTV is a little less than analog in some places), and they wanted to free that part up to use it for communications. (Cell phones, WiFi-type signals, radios for police and fire departments...) For example, they estimated that if the cell phone network were to be rebuilt in the newly-available range, they would need about half as many towers as we already have to achieve the same coverage.
