Dreamcast Emulation

Post by Krakko »

How do you do all this dreamcast emulation stuff? I dunno if it will even work on mine, since i got it little while after they came out. I looked up dreamcast emulation a while ago and found this huge FAQ thing about it that was extremely long, so I figured it was way too complicated. Where do you start? Do you just put an emulator and some games on a blank CD and then play it? Because if its easy than I might get some blank CDs and try it out put I probably could never get it to work.

It's not too hard I've done it before. You'll need to make a boot disc and an emulator and rom disk(both set up in a certain way). Also this will only work if ur Dc was made before October 2000. This is enough info to get started, just google stuff. Don't ask any questions about where to get roms or emulators.

www.megagames.com have the "Utopia Boot Disc" in there dreamcast section.

Thats your bootdisc.. www.dcemulation.com have everything else you need.

Simply download the emulator, extract it, read the instructions for it ( usually you put the roms into the ROMS directory in the folder that you extracted )

Burn this onto a disc, put the utopia disc into your dreamcast, load up your dreamcast, when utopia loads ( you'll see a spinning reindeer ) then open the disc drive, remove the boot disc and put in the emulator disc. Close the lid and wait for it to load.

Dreamcast can do a lot of things like play vcds, mp3s etc..

Its all worth trying out.

Alright thanks.
So I have my boot disk and emulator(snes) and stuff, do you just use normal snes roms for the computer, or do you need special ones for dreamcast?

Okay, I downloaded the Utopia Boot CD in clone cd format (because nero wouldn't work) and I burned it on to a CD-R, but it doesn't work. It just goes to the dreamcast logo, and than stays there for like 2 minutes, then goes to the screen that says play, or music or vmu. It reads the disk, because it spins, but it wont work

Yeah I had simalar problems with it, if you dont want to use that burning program look for cdi2nero. Basicly it converts all the Utopia cd images to a image that nero recignizes. I havent had a single problem with using cdi2nero so be confedent.

Yeah but I can't use nero because it says it has a compatibility issue with windows and every time i try to burn it in nero it screws up and stops halfway through and says theres a problem with the recorder or something. So I'm just gonna try disk juggler now and i hope it works or else i'll lose another cd.

Should we really be talking about ROMS and emulation (fun as they are)? :?

Most emulators don't require you to use a boot disc. If you download an emulator package that says "selfboot" then you don't need the utopia disc.

I don't know how to use Disc Juggler, but you could try CloneCD, or CDRWin, they support 1:1 CD copying.

Choose "copy CDs and DVDs from the same burner".

Unless you mean, how do you make non-boot games self-bootable. Go read everything on dcemulation... it's not as simple as just using Discjuggler.

I had an emulation and my DC broke

Post by Thornwillow »

I had an NES and SNES emulation for my DC and it broke, i got a new DC and the emulator didnt work on the newer one because they blocked emulators on the newer modules. Is there any way i can unblock it instead of buying a new DC, i still have the old broken one, should i switch the cd-drive (im new to this hacking consoles thing)?
