Or it could be really beautiful, nice vac form, extremely slimmed down board other complex stuff, so take that into account as well if time helps your score

I was going to say make it June 1-August 31... I kinda like Bacteria's idea better, though.

Nothing stops you from doing any of that.

Well June 1 to August 31 gives enough time to be fair. But yeah, I like Bac's idea. Maybe after enough entries are in give a limited amount of time (a week maybe) for everyone else to finish,

Call me dense, bacteria, but I am still trying to wrap my mind around what you are suggesting. I'll read what you wrote again but can you try to describe your idea a bit more? I don't quite understand it yet.

I think what Bacteria meant for a counter was like this:
Lets say the counter starts at 20. Then lets say I enter with my finished portable. So the counter drops to 19. This happens until the counter drops to like three. At this point, if there are more than three who wish to enter the comp, but are only say 80% of the way finished, then we will let them enter with a slight time extension as long as they are near finished. Sorry if I didn't explain that too well, actually.
If you're getting 404'd when trying to use the links in stickies, try this tutorial to find that juicy info.

Indeed.

The logic is that the compo will have enough entries to make it viable and interesting; if that takes 1 month, 2 months or 6 months; then so be it. Better to wait for a few months than have 3 entries, looking a bit daft. If the counter gets low quickly and people go, "whoh, nearly finished" then they can ask for a short extra extension so their systems can be entered, even if the counter is at zero; if they don't come up with the goods, then they lose out and voting starts. Having a counter has a psychological effect of making people keep track of where the number is at, especially when it gets lower.

So then, are we able to enter projects that are partly finished? A lot of people want to enter partial projects. If so, then I guess I'll also be a bit ahead.

Perhaps three categories in this contest? Previously started projects, projects started just for this, and paint/case/handheld mods.

Personally I really just want this competition to be for complete portables only, not minor cosmetic stuff like paint jobs or adding different colored LEDs to something.

Taking into account projects people have already started (I've got a couple myself) we should have two categories; one for portables started before the competition but finished by the deadline, and another for portables specifically made for this competition. What do you guys think would be a fair way to judge these? Obviously a portable someone's been working on for 8 months already is going to have a big advantage over one that just got started a month ago, so how should we take this into account?

It's a musical portable really - it's a small PC motherboard with battery strapped to a PS/2 keyboard, and you can hold it like a guitar and play music with it. It's hard to explain, but I've already got it planned out software wise. Does this count?
