Need help starting a ps2p

Post by devileyebrows42 »

Hi. I'm new to the forums. I dont have much to do over the summer so im going to try to make a ps2p portable. First of all i just want to say im a complete noob with this stuff and i have never done anything like this, (except add some LEDs to some wii controllers which was actually a surprisingly helpful experience). However i can add, subtract, multiply, and divide :lol: which is irrelevent, but i think i have what it takes to make one of these things. i have been studying this stuff and i am capable of using a soldering iron. I know this project involves some voltage conversion, crap loads of rewiring, patience, experience, and money. I am willing to put the time in to make it, if i know i have all of the parts i need and the information needed to finish this project. The problem is i do not know specifically which parts i need, and i think it is difficult finding specific information in the forums. So my major dilemma here is, i need to know the exact parts needed to make a portable ps2p (because i will screw up everything if i dont), and if possible, i could use some wiring diagrams (I know someone is going to tell me to look around for them, but ive tried and i cant seem to find the ones i need). I would need power diagrams, audio diagrams, and video diagrams. When it comes to rewiring controllers/adding headphones/adding external av components... i can find stickies on that. I will try to look around more but if anyone can point out things i would greatly appreciate it. The most important piece of information would be the parts needed to make this. If i have all the parts, then i can navigate around the forums and go from there. Any help would be appreciated.

The thing about the PS2 is that not many people have attempted to make one portable. There are a couple of reasons for that, mainly because of cost and technical issues. For once my answer is that you probably aren't going to find the information you need in the stickies. However, quick searches on Google will find you pinouts for the PS2's AV jack (you'll need that for attaching a screen) and things like that.

Edit:

Ha! We were pretty much writing the same thing at the same time!

I didnt think many people made portable ps2s. I was first considering making a portable N64, but i decided against it because i have a lot more games for the ps2. As of now i don't have many parts for the project so im trying to find out what i need. I only have a fat ps2 so im going to buy a slim one on ebay, but i do have a ps1 screen. I dont really have basic parts like a good soldiering iron (the metal tip is gigantic so its not good for micro soldiering) so i need to get those too. no worries though because i will get it all when i know what to get. I just bought Ben's book to get a better understanding of the entire process of building portables, and so hopefully i will be able to apply the general knowledge to create a ps2p or an n64p depending on the system i decide to make. If i actually get started on a good note, i will try to document my progress but i cant guarantee that. it probably wont be too helpful because like i said i am a noob but i have lots of resources and i can go to people for help. I will try to make a guide if i do succeed and i am not too lazy (i am writing down all of the parts i need as i learn more so if it turns out good i can distribute it). Another major problem is case forming. I have no idea how to make a case. How does Ben make his cases? Hey Life of Brian, i saw your snesp's. they look awesome! i think i remember reading that you vacuum formed some cases. i cant vacuum form, but do you have any other tips? also would the Zn-45 be big enough to house a ps2p? What is the usual amount of time it takes to wire a portable (for example a snesp)?

Last thing - Maybe not an exact parts list, but i could use a small list of general parts involved in the whole project. So if you could tell me about that, i would greatly appreciate it (I think i have a basic idea though). Thanks for the help

off the top of my head you will need:
Ps2..slim if possilble
Ps1 screen, or ps2 screen if you're lazy and dont wanna do too much work.
Battery http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?P ... rodID=3888" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2 controllers,
Btw, how will you make your case?

Thanks for the link. I added it to my reference document. anymore help would be appreciated. The more posts the better. I have been seriously thinking of how i am going to make the case. Franken-casing would be my best bet if i dont have anyone else to contact for help. The case would definitely be my worst point. I saw that someone successfully cut a ps2 slim mobo to fit a Zn-40 case. If i would use that method i would use a Zn-45 because i need the extra space to add another controller port and such. Otherwise i can ask a couple of people about some sort of woodworking. im not confident in the idea of vacuum forming even though i know that it can turn out uber cool. if anyone has other ideas...i am completely open to them.

I'd advise a larger capacity battery than that, wouldn't power the PS2p for that long.

im pretty sure the ps2 only needs 8.5v so that should be fine...for a like 1:30 hours...

if you're willing to pay 90+ that would be a good battery.

I think have decided to make an n64p instead. It is easier and there are still some great games on it, if I have questions i will ask them in the N64 forums. Thanks for the help
