Re: TV help
Is it a really loud buzz that sounds like the hum fluorescent lights make?
Is it a CRT TV? If so, don't screw around with it. Bring it somewhere to have it fixed or buy a new TV.
Chances are there's a problem with the picture tube or flyback transformer.

Re: TV help
Very true indeed, but it's worth saying WHY this is, too. It's not like most electronics, where the worst that can happen is that you don't fix it or make it worse, and you just throw it away. CRT TVs can KILL you. They store a ton of electricity when they're used, which doesn't really go away for a while, even when unplugged. One wrong move could be your last.bicostp wrote:Is it a CRT TV? Obviously, this very well could be heard for the millionth time, but not worth taking a chance.

Re: TV help
A CRT stores a ginormous electric charge somewhere. Before you do anything, you have to release the charge. Believe it or not there is a safe way to do it. Basically you shove a grounded screwdriver into a certain contact, or something like that.
Don't trust me though, I've never done it. Just google it though. "discharging a crt"

Re: TV help
Please, stay out of there.
If you absolutely insist, you can drain the charge by crossing the two contacts off any large capacitors in there. It will make a big FLASH/BANG, so be prepared. Also, protip: Only work with ONE HAND! Keep your other hand AWAY from the internals. This way, if you do get shocked, it will only be across your arm, and while it will hurt like crap, you will be fine (Save for small burn marks). If you get a shock from one hand to the other, it will go straight across your heart, and possibly kill you.

Re: TV help
so true. although it can be useful for shocking other people! put a charged capacitor in your hand, touch someone else, then let the capacitor contact your skin. if you do it right, it shocks them. if you do it wrong, ouch.palmertech wrote:Please, stay out of there.

Re: TV help
Actually, you want to put your other hand in your pocket. Or something. I don't remember very well, haven't read it in months.
