Honestly I could only see this being pratical is at MGC...

I'll be putting one in my portable anyway cause it sounds like an awesome idea.
I haven't been here in awhile, and looking back it's one of the worst ideas I ever had. I'm back and I'll be here for awhile, I was quite active 1 year ago and I hope to become that again.

Or if you build two portables at the same time, which is the ENTIRE REASON I suggested it.

Still in the development stages for my "two N64 portables at the same time" project, by the way. I've been sidetracked by a couple of other projects.

Good luck!

Another option for all of the other counsels that require much higher number of pins would he HDMI. It has 20 pins, readably available, and the HDMI port is even smaller than a cat-5 connector. If you know where to look there fairly cheep.

PLUS you could have a HDMI inspired networking logo.

You'd have to fix "NTWORKING" to "NETWORKING" Other than that, sweet logo!

I know HDMI cables are easy enough to find, but are the female plugs available? If so, that might be the way to go (albeit more expensive than other methods).

Whoops, thats what I get for doing 10 things at once. -Fixed-

Also your portable will look sick having an "HDMI" port on it. 8)

the whole thing sounds cool, but why a crossover cable? I'm confuzzled  . I'm thinking of doing something similiar for my nes portable now! I'm impressed. For a cool effect how about adding a 555 timer or a 2N3904 transistor to make the led flash when the ethernet cable is plugged into the portable, the 555 timer would be in the portable. It's just an idea. If you don't like it its fine.
i hate how electronic part suppliers give you an option on their website to filter your searches so that you can find a certain part and no results come up!

I say make it however you want to make it - this is only an idea that we've been kicking around because it's interesting. I'm sure when I get around to implementing it I'll probably make some modifications of my own.

Here's my contribution- the XDS. Basically it's a docking station (or just a box) that connects to the LOB64 port. The XDS has controller ports- although most portables won't be able to use the P1 port- and AV out for a TV. It may or may not contain a power supply. I have a paintshopped diagram but my picture host is too slow to upload right now.
