Yeah, it's still going to register as a button press. What you'd need is for a light press in one direction to just 'tap' the button, rather than 'pressing' it. Then, if you push the stick farther, it'd tap the button faster or longer.

Dunno how to do it, though - that's beyond me.

Back in the days when acidmods was not useless, someone did this on a GBA. With proper pulse based "analog" and all.

That looks like it just clicks onto the front of it, and if so, probably makes the control worse than it already is.

I recommend using this: Multi directional switch
Get it, use it, love it.

It's what I used in this SNES portable, and it works amazingly well for SNES games. I imagine it would be fine for GameBoy as well. One major advantage this has over dpads and analog joysticks is that it has a very small footprint, in addition to being digital.

Thanks once again to vomitsaw who mailed me a couple of them when I begged him after seeing his CANCer controller.

The idea of using PWM (or varying-length pulses) to simulate analog control in digital-only systems is nothing new, and will only work on older systems (SNES and older) because all systems after and including the N64/PS1 have button debouncing circuits that screw up this technique. It will still work somewhat, but'll probably be even more frustrating than it was before.

I pointed that out first.

I want one. Even though it probably sucks. I can't stand tact switches either BTW.

Won't that glitch up a lot of games?

When I was running from my house to a car waiting for me outside, my PSP flew out of my hands and smashed into pieces on the concrete ("first day I ever cried" ;) ) - the joystick was still intact, so I took a look at it and connected it up to my gba.

the joystick was unimpressive when I took it apart, it was basically a rod inside a plastic house with a circle disk and a rubber band/spring.
All I did was basically connect each wire from the D pad point (and the ground) and hook it up to the points on the joystick.

It didn't work properly, only 2 directions worked, not to mention the digital aspect. I always knew it was going to be a 4 points digital joystick before I connected it, but in reality the feeling is absolutely terrible. If you can't get an actual "analog" component to it don't bother.

On a different note, I had one of those "state of the art" arcade joysticks for a Mega Drive. When I took it apart, it was basically just a stick that would press on 4 heavy switches, if you wanted diagonal it would press on 2 of the switches at the same time, lol. Clicky rubbish it was, no good for Fireballs!
I am a case modder trying to be a portablizer. Will get there one day. :)

:( Acidmods isn't useless, F00 F00 and L0rdnic0 both recently started working again... But still, It's quite possible to do this, It would require buying a "Razor X" PCB, which you can get from http://www.coolmods.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . There's a tutorial somewhere on acidmods on how to set up the pcb in the analog switch... But all that you need to do once the razor x is installed in the analog stick would be to solder the left, right, up, down, and ground pins to the gameboy.

It's appropriate information, though.

Thanks for the input, alentris.
