what's the dumbest thing a non-hacker has said to you?

Post by themadhacker » Sat Feb 14, 2009 8:45 pm

I have recently noticed that there are a LOT of ignorant people out there, and I thought of this topic.

The dumbest things I have heard are the following three things

conversation 1:

classsmate: Bill, my computer just crashed.
Me: Really? I'll buy it off of you for parts.
classmate: No, I threw it out.
Me: why? If it crashed, the harddrive is the only bad part.
classmate: No, I got a virus that completely destroyed everything on my computer and all its parts.
Me: *raises eyebrow*
classmate: Really, it does not work at all!
Me: does it turn on?
Classmate: Yes, but the virus made it so that the computer can't do stuff.
Me: if it turns on it's not destroyed.

The conversation went on more, but I forgot the rest of it.

This next one was with the same guy lol. This one happend only a few days ago.

Classmate: so, Bill, have you modded anything lately?
Me: Well, I just got a few remote controlled cars, so I might make a cheapy remote control robot with them.
Classmate: That's like impossible.
Me: no it isn't. you basically just use the circuitry and motors and modify them and thier functions.
Classmate: Oh really? then how would you control it?
Me: with the controllers.
Classmate: Dude, so you know how to program the parts to be controlled with the RC controller?
Me: ....

This next one is quite funny. It was between me and one of my friends.

Friend: Dude, guesse what happened with my cell phone.
Me: what?
Friend: Well, I heard online that it was good for phone batteries to stick mine in the freezer. But i got a little scared that the cold would break it, so I took it out and stuck it in the microwave to heat it back up.
Me:
Friend: then the microwave started to spark, and my battery started to hiss, so I put it up to ear to listen to it.
Me: I'm surprised it didn't blow up in your face.
Classmate:  that could have happended?! In anycase, my phone's battery doesn't work anymore.
Me in a sarcastic tone: I wonder why.

STUPID PEOPLEZ! :D :D :D

well, some of them are. the kid with the crashed computer is actually an honor student. The funny thing is he thinks that because of his grades he knows everything. apparently not. My friend with the cell phone...well, I don't know exactly what he was thinking.

And I mean no offense to Arrow---> or EvenWorse, because you guys are not stupid and I hang out with you.

Me: I mod stuff to make them portable
Friend: so you take a screen, controller, batteries, and shove them into a case
Me: well yes, but its more detailed then that
Friend: Well I could do it
Me: but you have to solder, which is hard, you couldnt attach a HD to a PS2 like I could (Sarcastic/boasting)
Friend: well I could with a big PS2 just plug it in, or better yet I could mod one onto an xbox
Me: *Speechless*

Friend: so how much have you made selling portables
Me: $1000, thats after the cost of the parts, so like 1500 I guess
Friend: why do you make so much
Me: idiots with money
Friend: well couldnt they do it?
Me: theyr idiots with money
Friend: well couldnt they do it

It went on like that for a long time (Dont worry I only sell the crappy portables I make, but keep the good ones, I still have em all)
I have a lot better ones, I just cant remember them.

Friend: Oh, you know my computer crashed?
Me: Really? What happened?
Friend: Well, I got a virus, and the anti-virus isn't working and I can't use the internetz.
Me: Oh, well, thats not a crash...
Friend *getting pissy*: YES IT DID IAN!!! IM NOT RETARDED!
Me: I'm telling you, a crash isn't a virus, it's a crash when you can't use your hard drive.
Friend: How do you use a Hard drive????
Me: First, you find out whether its IDE or SATA, and you.... WAIT! *Palm**Face*

That doesn't seem like a bad idea at all.

Not a bad idea unless there's loose parts, but there shouldn't be any.

Actually, it could be a bad idea, especially if they weren't careful. Vacuum attachments love to hook onto wires and unplug them. Plus I think the nozzle creates some static electricity, or something like that. I always use compressed air.

I've heard some stupid terminology, for example:
"Can I 'X' this out?" (referring to closing a window)
"Let me give you a copy on my USB" (Referring to a thumbdrive)
"Where's the Windows?" (I was running the command line full screen)

Scene: computer lab during a Linux admin course. The teacher is giving a lecture on the OS, and keeps throwing in freetard propaganda.

Teacher: "In Linux you can set permissions on a filesystem level. Windows doesn't let you do that."
Me: *Raises hand, gets called on* "I'm sorry but Windows has had filesystem level access permissions since 1993, when NT 3.1 was released."
Teacher: "Well, they must have copied the idea from Linux."
Me: "But you just said Linux was a part-time project started in 1991. Why would such a large company copy from a 2 year old project which, at that point, had next to no install base?)
teacher: "..." *Continues with the lecture*

This was in a college class when I was getting my Associate's, by the way. Tip of the iceberg for that class.

yes, it is a horrible idea. you do realize that a vacuum is gonna create static electricity and fry the motherboard, right (as what happened in this instance)?

There's some people who use vacuums to cool their computers. I guess it depends on how close you get to the components. I've never tried it (vacuum cooling or cleaning), myself; I usually prefer to physically pick up the dust bunnies and put them in the trash.
