Idea for a first case

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Idea for a first case

Post by rikitheshadow »

I'm a newb, never created a case. Let alone create a portable. I do have some experience with a dremel tool though from a previous project of mine.

converted a NES into a DVD player

My idea for a case was something based around the PSP. Produce a similar shape, of course not the same size but upscale it a little bit.
Using a Mini SNES, PSone screen, Lithium Ion Rechargeable (Fat cyclinder shaped batteries not the polys)

I sorta want to design the UMD door to be like a cartridge door. Open the door, slide the cart in, and close the door. (Pretty much can play with it open or close so nothing special) Button layout will stay pretty the same as the PSP's layout just minus the analog stick. Not to worried about the batteries being removable. Though I hate the fact it sorta has a T shaped mobo with the batteries to run and charge em properly so it might be a fat sucker near the center of the unit.

Guess what i'm getting at is i'm probably going to have to go with the Vaccum forming technique, probably using model clay. Or is wood a good case type for a first timer (I do have woodshop experience)? And those plastic sheets for the vaccum forming technique, they have pretty thick sheets or something, or am i'm going to have to putting a lot of reinforcements to keep it from being to soft? Because I understand how the stuff works, I used to make signs and stuff in my woodshop with our small vaccum former approx. 11x14 or 12x16

I'll try to post some rough drawings later that I have for the design, but considering it's off a portable thats already out there I figure someone may already have an idea of what i'm talking about.

Have a look on Thursday at my IntoPlay - PSone project; the case is probably what you need, the thickness of the case will allow for a SNES cart to be internal - size ok. Old pic of this, taken ages ago:

Is that the design you are working on? Looks pretty nice and compact, you gonna use a smaller screen or noac board or some time of clone?

rikitheshadow - Yes, the pic is the backing part of the case. You will see my system and results tomorrow in News and also the Playstation forum here (and my site). I will be doing N64 and Retro Duo (SNES) with the same cases too; although at moment just selling for what I have actually made to date, which at the moment is the Playstation, although will expand "the range" over the year. Have a look at my website under "Playstation 1" for the step-by-step guide, which is different to the one posted here, as it was made more relevant and also brought up to date. You can see what is included in my cases by visiting my website too if you are interested in having a look.

Bump.

Any of ya'll believe that a Mini SNES can fit within the confines of a PSone case? Like the one that was designed to fit with the PSone screen. Sorta wanna make it like Palmer's it's very sleak and its got that nice base color.

One sec let me grab link.

Heres the link in which i'm talking about. PalmerTech has a really nice idea, but he designed his for a FC twin, do ya'll think I can fit a Mini SNES? Or can ya'll suggest a NOAC or clone console made by a 3rd party company that could fit? Lol, possibly link some places I can find one for cheap.
