You are right... Sadly. The thing is, the government is not "giving" you this money. It has to come from taxes, so the only people who benefit in the end are tax-evaders.

A pity that America thinks we are being given money... Do you honestly think they cut something out of the normal budget to pay for this? The money is either taxpayer money, or they borrowed it, which is even worse; Then, it is the future generation paying for our boxes, with interest! :(

True, you're paying for them either way. But at least the illusion of being given money helps things for now, and I think that's what they wanted.

They should defiantly NOT postpone the Digital Switchover.

If people are not ready now, they never will be.

Does anyone actually need the boxes here, just curious? If you have any sort of cable service that doesn't use any sort of airborne waves to send the signal or satellite you're already set.

I do. We don't subscribe to any kind of advanced television service, be it cable, satellite, or whatever. We've used plain old over-the-air all my life.

I might just get a new TV, though. A 20" CRT with S-Video and Component inputs would be better than the junker I've got now.

I already posted something about this a loooooooooong time ago. (ok, maybe not that long)
yea, it's pretty awesome, but in the long run that means that a lot of us that want a small reliable 2.5-3" screen, they will have to look elsewhere... and that is incredibly sad indeed

Getting back to your original topic...

The thought had occurred to me as well, and like you, I was initially pleased at the thought of a cheap supply of portable TVs.

However...

Thinking a little bit more long-term, I think the average person finding one in their closet is going to just chuck it when they can't get a signal. Even if they realize that it is because it does not have a digital tuner, they may think "why would anyone want this?" and throw it out.

As time goes on, there will be fewer of these TVs for sale online (I have already seen some with digital tuners that will work after the transition). Where does that leave us?

The two places where you can always find old electronics for sale: garage sales and thrift stores. For the next several years, analog pocket TVs will occasionally be available here.

Agree or disagree?

I would have to agree. Over time people will start throwing out the TVs like you said. However, that is nothing new, people throw out all kinds of useful goodies (trust me, I know this for a fact).

yeah, I still have no clue why the business didn't just get a new battery and powercord for this laptop instead of just getting rid of it.

The T61p isn't cheap laptop by anymeans.

I kind of already said that, so agreed.
Although i do keep all of my junk, i even ask my friends for junk they don't want.
Ya, the production line for these things has already stopped for these in America for the "Great Anticipation" of the Digital Switchover, and that makes me sad. (what i mean by this is that there are no mew models coming out at all or anything.)
Honestly, i think analog serves a purpose, and i don't think we should throw it out the window because it's outdated. Honestly, what would we do without analog sticks? (Not that I'm saying we're getting rid of those.)

What. The. Pfargtl. Image

One commenter on Engadget hit the nail on the head, posting exactly what I was going to say.
'Richard' from Engadget wrote:And those millions upon millions of people haven't been inundated with ads warning about the switchover on their OTA stations using their rabbit ear antennas? Those same people haven't been able to cough up $50 in that time to buy a box?

a) They're lazy or dumb
b) Really should be doing something OTHER than watching television.
c) In four months these same people will STILL not ready.
d) All the problems surrounding digital tv will still be there (coupon issues, fringe reception, etc.)

So that begs the question of what congress has accomplished with this delay? Absolutely NOTHING. Ain't status quo grand?

Come Feb 17, I hope that broadcasters have the balls that congress seriously lacks, and they pull the plug on analog tv once and for all.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/04/its- ... /16922226/

Seriously. We've been pushing the switch for at least the last 2 years. If they didn't do anything in that time, what difference will 4 months make?

This isn't a solution. It's procrastination.

Old People: Get with the times already!..or just don't watch TV.

If your not old, but probably not white: Go get a freaking education and get a real job so that you can afford things and not leech off the middle class.

White People who can afford cable but don't have cable: Get off your lazy fat asses and go buy cable.

People with cable, most likely white: Go watch some TV!

Racism and flaming all in the same post? OMG 1337 H4X!!!
PS: This whole post is a joke.
