i just got 2 of the old phat PS2's with a controller av cable power cable and a game. one completely broken (case mod maybe) and one that worked but had problems reading discs. so i opened it up cleaned the laser and now it works perfectly.

not bad for free

bought a subwoofer a while back at a school sale for 50 cents kjust looked it up to see how much wattage it ios since i just got my car, and its 50 watta and works

Probably my best score yet; I got two consoles from guys at school. The first is an N64. It was six dollars. It doesn't have any hookups or controller- just the console. It's dirty but it works just fine. The second is a slim PS2. It's covered with marker and also console-only but it was free. The guy who gave it to me said it works but I'm not sure.

Here's a list of the hauls I made in 2008 (not necessarily in chronological order):

A Palm M515, perfect condition, for $3. Needed a charger, though, but I bought one on eBay for $7.

A set of totally incredible PC speakers for 75 cents, a PS/2 keyboard for five cents, and a PS2 Intec LCD screen for $1. I have a slim PS2, so it's really not much good, but it might come in handy for something.

"Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal" and "Psychonauts" for the PS2 for $5 each.

"Megaman X7" and "Jampack Vol. *something*" for $5 each. ("Jampack" was probably kind of a rip-off, but it was to help a pal get a new airsoft gun.)

A broken Dreamcast (I suspect the controller board is burned out), VMU, MadCatz six-button controller and power cord, and a PS2 messenger bag, for a total of $7.

A SNES, all the hookups, two controllers, and eight games including "Super Mario All-Stars," "Super Street Fighter II Turbo," and a copy of "Mario Paint" (which included the mouse), and a video switcher box: Free. I ended up giving most of that SNES stuff to my little sister, except for "All-Stars" and "Super Street Fighter II." The switcher was identical to one I bought at Wal-Mart on clearance for $10. All that stuff was just sitting on a blanket in their driveway with a sign that said "free." I also bought a PlayStation (not a PSone) with two controllers (one was a grey Dualshock, the other one was a black non-analog Sony controller), a Sony-brand memory card, all the hookups, and a Goldeneye cheat device that allows you to play burned games, for just $5 from the same guys. That was probably the best haul I made this year because of how cheap it was.

A PS2 hat for $1.

A set of eight N64 games and manuals in a... I guess you'd call it a game organizer. $10. At the very next garage sale I hit that day, I bought a Nintendo 64 with two controllers, a memory card, all the hookups, and five games, for $10. One of the games was "Goldeneye 007," the manual for which, coincidentally, was one of the manuals I got at the previous sale.

Four Atari 2600 consoles (two Darth Vader models, a four-switch woody, and a six-switch Sears model), four controllers, two power adapters, two sets of paddle controllers, and 37 games, eight Dreamcast games (complete), and two SNES games (with manuals), for a grand total of $50. No switchboxes for the Ataris, though, but it turns out I didn't need any. I went back the next week and bought a set of wireless Atari 2600 controllers, a very unusual-looking NES controller (the D-pad is orange and the A and B buttons are iridescent yellow), and four boxed NES games, including "The Legend of Zelda" and "Zelda II" (with gold cartridges) for a grand total of... I think it was $8.

"Halo: Combat Evolved" for the PC for $2. (My laptop can't handle it, though. Figures.)

A brand-new boxed Saturn RF switch for $1. Supposedly the people I bought it from had a box full of Saturn stuff, but they never found it and when I gave them my phone number, they never called. Jerks.

"Super Smash Bros." for the N64 for $5.

I think that's it, unless I forgot something.

Went to the pawn shop today. Bought a component video cable for PS2, power supply for PS2, and a PS1 controller for $25. Not a great deal, but less than I would have to pay otherwise (the cable alone is worth $50). The guy at the pawn shop was going to give me a wireless controller for free because it had no receiver but I forgot to grab it.

Unfortunately the PS2 has some unidentified problem. It played a CD fine, but rejected two different DVDs and the very scratched game disc found inside. I have no idea what's going on. Right now I'm going to try to find a less damaged game to test with.

and by iron-age, I mean old Pentium I/II computers, oh yeah!

XCVG: Where were you looking for those component cables at? You can get a set of Sony-brand cables with a USB cord for the PS3 (though they will work with the PS2 as well) at Wal-Mart for $40. $50 for just the component cables is, quite frankly, a rip-off.

Also, is the PS2 an original large model, or a slim model? If it's a large model, the laser probably needs adjusting. Not too hard to do.

The guy at the pawn shop said the cables were worth $50, and remember I'm in Canada and our dollar is really low right now.

It's a slim model PS2. Should I buy a lens cleaning disc to clean the lens?

Well, the guy at the pawn shop lied. Doesn't surprise me, though. Glad you didn't get ripped off, at least.

Also, it's a slim PS2? That's different; the large ones are easy to fix and the process is well-documented all over the internet. One of the main purposes of the slim one was to prevent the disc-reading errors of the big PS2 from occurring. You should probably mention that it's a slim PS2 in the topic you made about it; it makes a difference in the adivce you'll get.

I'd try cleaning the lens before you get worried, though. Dip a Q-Tip in either some rubbing alcohol or some Windex and very gently wipe the lens off. Clean your game discs, too. I use Windex for that; works great.

That's for the PSP Slim, though, not the PS2/PS3.

Can't seem to locate component cables for the latter on that site, though, which sucks, because I'd be willing to upgrade my TV if I could find them for around that price.

I got a N64 with all the cables and a memory card, 6 games: Super Smash Bros., Majora's mask, Orcarina of time, Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark and Super Mario 64 for $11. Just walked around the neighborhood and found deals. All six came with instructions. Not bad right?

I guess I forgot to mention that they were Sony cables, not generic junk.

And those are for PSP anyway.
