Completed desktop PSU.

Post by themadhacker »

Ok, I collect crashed computers and save the parts from them. I got a PSU from one, and decided to make a desktop PSU with it. Due to the small size of the PSU's case, everything is crammed in. Because of this, I had to mount the fan on the outside instead of being inside, taking up space. For the Plugs, I used old A/V plugs, and the power switch is...get this...from another computer PSU. To get the 8 volts, I used a 7808 regulator from a dead circuit board.

From left to right: 3.3v, 5v, 8v, 12v. The bottom row is all ground.

Oh, badass.Why no 9v?
That's kind of... standard in everything.

Because 8 volts is close enough to 9, and due to the vey limited space, there was not enough room for two more plugs.

But I am a cheap ass, and re-use things. Also, If I want, I can put a 9 volt regulator to the wires that go into the plugs. I could do that, and just plug it into the 12v plug, and get an output of 9v.

Not very. There are holes on one side of the case which the air from the fan can circulate through.

It would look a lot nicer if the holes were lined up and like triton said, you only need one ground plug.

I made one of an old PC PSU too! But that plug idea is badass. I think I'll incorporate that into mine.

What I did is also add two usb plugs for USB devices, you might want to do that too. Just a suggestion

I know, but with more ground plugs, I don't need to make a stretch with the wires I plug into them.

When you did this, how did you remove the unneeded connections? Did you desolder them completely, or just cut the wires as close to the board as you could? Did you insulate them at all?
