GUIDE: Update a custom firmwared PSP to 5.00 M33-6 [newest]

Post by BoomBox-Creations » Tue Oct 21, 2008 3:48 am

This guide will show you how to update your already custom firmwared PSP to 5.00 M33-6

NOTE: You need a PSP that already has a M33 custom firmware or 1.50 Official Firmware, Other custom firmwares might work with this guide also, but im not sure... If you don't have a custom firmwared PSP, go here: http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?t=26459 to learn how to custom firmware it. ( that link will also show you how to unbrick your PSP.... )

Also, you can be on any M33 Custom Firmware. So if your Phat PSP ( PSP-1000 ) is on 3.52 M33-4, you can update straight to this firmware. You DO NOT need to update to 3.71 M33-4 or 4.01 M33-2 ( or some other ) and then this, you only need to update to this. Nothing in between...

If you would rather use a PSP with a WiFi connection, you can use the guide by Aguilz, which can be found here: http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?t=28060

So lets get started!

You Will Need:
• A Computer that you can browse files that are on a memory stick
• An Internet Connection ( duh )
• winRAR or something that works like it... ( if you don't have winRAR, download the trial here: http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-225 ... 07677.html and install )

Now you will need to download these four ( 4 ) files:

5.00 Official Firmware: http://rapidshare.com/files/154173870/500.PBP ( mirror: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=K50DK6PK )

5.00 M33-6 Custom Firmware Update: http://rapidshare.com/files/186553068/500m33_6.zip

Image

Only for PSP-1000's:

1.50 kernel addon for 5.00: http://rapidshare.com/files/155242372/150k_addon500.rar ( mirror: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SO1ADK4B )

1.50 Official Firmware: http://rapidshare.com/files/139611825/150.PBP

Now unzip the 5.00 M33-6 update. ( zip is called 500m33_6 )

copy the 'UPDATE' folder into this directory on your PSP: X:PSP-->GAME ( where X is your drive letter, like mine is F )

Now open up the 'UPDATE' folder that is in your memory stick and put the '500.PBP' you downloaded into the 'UPDATE' folder.

Image

Now exit USB Mode, if you have a custom theme on, put the official theme on.

Go to your 'Game' menu on the PSP, go to memory stick, and run the 'PSP Update ver 5.00'

Image

Don't worry, it might look like its updating to the official firmware, but its not.

When it gets to the end, you might get a blue screen with in a couple languages saying a warning, if you do, it means you have a custom theme installed.

Shutdown your PSP manually after that screen disappears and then turn it back on. Now you will have to redo your settings. When done, you now have 5.00 M33-6 installed on your PSP!!

Format Your Memory Stick.

THE KERNEL ADDON BELOW IS ONLY FOR PSP-1000'S ( PSP-Phat ) IF INSTALLED ON A SLIM & LITE PSP, IT WILL BRICK AND CANNOT BE UNDONE!! ( BELIEVE ME, IVE TRIED IT, I NEEDED A NEW PSP )

Now if you have a Phat PSP ( PSP-1000 ) make sure you have loaded the 1.50 Official Firmware above and the kernel Addon.

If you have Installed this on 5.00 M33-3 or 5.00 M33-4 you dont need to do this again.

extract the '150k_addon500.rar' to somewhere, and put the '150k_installer' to this directory on your PSP: 'PSP-GAME5XX'

And copy the 150.PBP to the root of your memory stick.

Now exit USB mode, and go to your 'Game Menu' on your PSP, go down to 'Memory Stick' and press 'X' on '1.50 Kernel Addon for 5.00'

go through the installation of it and reboot when it asks to.

Now people with a phat PSP can play homebrew on their PSP!!

Hope this helped someone, if you have any problems, just comment here or send a PM =D

ill put some images up of the installation of both 5.00 M33-6 and the 1.50 installer, when i have time =D

nice work man

seems the psp documentation is being greatly upgreaded since the lot of new guides posted recently.

I think a nice idea would be sticky at least some of them.

I´m sure most of newcomers will be very thankfull :P

It should work on now on 5.00 M33-3, DAX put the fix that sony made in 5.01 into 5.00 M33-2, so it should work in the newest version on M33-3, if it doesnt, it might be your connection?

thehackerinside run the network update again, so you can get the bug fixes that have been fixed with M33-3.

Somewhat new to CFW myself...

Just for clarification - PSP-1000 refers to the 1000 series (phatties) which includes my 1001?

I'm currently running 3.52M33-4. Works fine, but I would like to upgrade to 5.00M33-3 for the better PS1 ISO support and full screen keyboard. I have been told that I would need to upgrade to 4.01M33-2 first, and then to 5.00M33-3. Is this correct?

Finally, being able to copy my UMD's to my memory stick is of absolute importance here. I hate dragging along cases of UMD's... Have there been any issues with ISOs for certain games? I can completely run UMDEmulator with any game on 5.00M33-3?

yer, psp 1001 is classified as the 1000 series, like the australia region of the phats is the 1002....

no, you dont need to go from 4.01 M33-2 or lower to get 5.00 M33-3

simply because that the ofw eboot has all the previous files in it and the CFW eboot has all the previous changes in it aswell.... otherwise it would be more like 5.00 m33-15 or 4.01 M33-9 or something like that...

adn you dont nede any emulator to play the UMDS off the MS, well, not an outside one anyway....

there is 1 built into the firmware, now for this bit, im guessin you have 3.71 M33 or above, press select on your PSP to get to the VSH menu.

go to 'UMD ISO MODE' and press left or right until you get to 'Sony NP9660' that lets you play mroe games off the MS without a UMD inserted.

now while still in the VSH Menu, go to 'USB DEVICE' and press left or right on the PSP until you get to 'UMD Disc'

now press select to exit the VSH Menu, and go to settings and then USB Connection

plug your PSP into your computer and the folder that usually comes up is your mem stick, if it does, press o on your psp tehn enter usb connection again.

when you enter usb again, there should be 1 folder in there called 'UMD 9660' ( correct me if im wrong ) now copy and paste that to your desktop or somewhere you will remember it.

when its done, rename it to the game ( so for crisis core, name it final fantasy VII crisis core or something along those lines... )

exit USB mode, and press select again. go back to 'USB DEVICE' and press left or right until its on 'Memory Stick'

now press select again to exit the VSH Menu, navigate back to usb and that is your Memory stick.

if there isnt a folder called 'ISO' create 1, but make sure it is 'ISO' ( without the ' s ) now put the game that you jsut ripped into that folder. now exit USB mode again, go to game and memory stick. and there should be your game....

and you dont need an emulator to play UMD rips, because when we changed the 'UMD ISO MODE' in the VSH Menu to Sony NP9660, that lets us play more game rips ( about 98% of them ) without a UMD drive in. the M33 Driver does the same thing, but the other 2, you need a UMD Disc in there to play rips off your mem stick.

hope that helped.... and im not allowed to give outg any links to downlaod roms.... by law, ive almost been caught 1ce from it, im not doing it again....

Here we go again... now that 5.00 M33-4 is out, I'd like to update from 5.00 M33-3. The whole process is much simpler than I thought it would be.

Simple question this time... Do I have to run the 1.5 kernel addon again if I ran it when I updated to 5.00 M33-3?

Thanks!

you dont need to do the addon if you had installed it on 5.00 M33-3, but updating the cfw from 5.00 M33-x to 5.00 M33-4 is the same way as this guide, just without the 5.00 ofw, anything below 5.00 M33 ( eg. 4.01 M33-2) updating, you need the 5.00 ofw...

First thx for the time you give in helping.I have just done this to my psp GUIDE: How to Custom Firmware PSP-1000's and PSP-2000's Oon PSPHACKS forumn. This went smoothly and no problems. At the end it said i needed a firmware update and a link was to this forumn and page.I did exactly as shown and no problems till got this far.

Now exit USB Mode, if you have a custom theme on, put the official theme on.

Go to your 'Game' menu on the PSP, go to memory stick, and run the 'PSP Update ver 5.00'

Don't worry, it might look like its updating to the official firmware, but its not.
Nothing happened and if i go to system information it shows software as still 4.01 M33-2.
My psp is a 2000slim and lite.Could you please help me.
Many thanks

You can't just run the update, you'll also need to put a 500.pbp in the root of your memory stick.
