Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Post by newguy101 »

ok so i figure ill give vac forming a try and was wondering where to get the polystyrene. i know Turbo Tax had a site in his guide but their shipping is outrageous and i dont really need to spend $20, just need the 8 sheets that they offer for $10. cant seem to find anyone that sells it in town.

If you need to know how to make a cheap vacuum forming table, have a look at my site. Step-by-step tutorial.

I use Plasticard, 2mm (0.080"). In the USA they call it Styrene. Various places sell it on e-bay. I went for 325mm x 220mm.

I have a bunch of 0.060" styrene. It might be a little thin for most people, but it works well with extensive bondo-ing and franken-casing.

I'm in Canada though, so shipping might be a little expensive. I can send you a sheet or two, depending on the size, for like $10-$20 shipped. Take the size of your portable, length times height times height plus 4 inches, then the same for width, and that's about what you need. Better to have too much than too little, and I have a bunch of surplus I'd get rid of for cheap. But shipping...

See if you can find a hobby shop that sells model trains. They use a lot of styrene in that hobby for their model buildings and such.
