I think I have a problem with my NESp

Post by jgibson »

I had a problem testing my NESp yesterday. I have the unit wired (save the tact switches, sound, and white led mod for the screen), and when I attemped to power it up, I get nothing. I looked at all of the wiring, and it matches Ben's book. I checked all of the parts of the NES motherboard and noticed that my 7805 voltage regulator is really really hot. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this issue? I don't have the tact switches wired yet, and I don't know if that makes any difference, but I would like to get it working before I drop $60 on one of Ben's cases. I tried wiring the video out to a phono cable and testing it on my regular TV, but that didn't work either. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should do, or how I could test it?

I am using a 9.6 volt 1600 mAH Ni-MH battery that I got from Radio Shack. The unit only needs 5 volts. That's why I am using a 7805, to change 9.6 volts to 5 volts. The book doesn't tell you to use a heat sink on the 7805 on the NES board, but I know the excess voltage is released as heat. Do I need to use a heat sink?

hmm... look for any shorts on the board. Do you have a multimeter?

If you wanted to check for connections to be good, he can hook up an LED to alligator clips.

well I checked the board using a magnifying glass and I may have some short circuts. I bought a new 7805 but I haven't installed it yet. Would having an unmodded PSone screen cause the unit not to power up? I know it draws a lot of power, but is it enough to cause it to not work?

Does anyone know an effective way to test the unit. I want to make sure that it works, by testing, I mean bypass the controller circut board or something to attach it directly to my TV.

This may be a little late, but the first thing I'd suggest is getting a multimeter.
